Portrait of a Teenager Who Joins the Army
photo gallery
2010 Pulitzer Prize, Feature Photography, Craig F. Walker, Denver Post.

Ian Fisher cradles his injured elbow during his processing into the Army in Ft. Benning, Ga. On June 20, 2007. Though he later had a change of heart after speaking with a commander, he saw a possibility to escape his enlistment only two days in. From his first day in fatigues through his days driving a Humvee in Iraq, military life often didn’t mesh with his expectations. Sometimes the structure of the Army and the demands of training for war clashed with the freedom he shared with his outside friends.

The faint lines are friendship links, darkened if they have a common photo appearance. The auto-clustering algorithm also uses highlight colors for each clique (a clique has many in-group friendship links and few links to people outside the group). Looks like a big pile of pinkos to me.

Friends are also ranked using “betweeness centrality” to measure their importance in the social network; high rank goes to those who connect different cliques.

The green cloud shows common profile tags among sub-groups.

Good to see most of my friends smiling… =D

I couldn't resist, sorry:

1: Go to Wikipedia and hit random (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random). The first random Wikipedia article you get is the name of your band.

2: Go to quotationspage.com and hit random (http://quotationspage.com/random.php3). The last four or five words of the very last quote of the page is the title of your first album.

3: Go to flickr and click on "explore the last seven days" (http://www.flickr.com/explore/interesting/7days/). Third picture, no matter what it is, will be your album cover.

4: Use photoshop or similar (picnik.com is a free online photo editor) to put it all together.

5: Post it with this text in the "caption" and tag the friends you want to join in.

The font choice was stylish:

This was a test shot. I'm thinking of getting a 300mm prime lens for birding which doesn't happen to have vibration reduction. The zoom telephoto I have now does have VR, and I've become used to it and like it. I wondered how I could do at birding with the VR off. So I ran an experiment this morning, on a cloudy day, with subjects near and far, with the ISO high and the shutter speed high. The result was promising for doing without VR. My photos were just about all sharp if I kept the shutter speed at 1/400 or faster, even though the subject bobbed a bit in the view finder.

P.S.--I love the online photo manipulation service that picnik.com provides. If you have a slow lens that takes clear but somewhat darkish photos, the auto-fix button of the picnik.com online editor will brighten your photo quite nicely. The copy of my photo above was brightened with this resource. You can compare it with the first version of the photo below, sharpened a little, but not treated at all for exposure, with iPhoto.

This was taken the last night I was in Madrid. My friends decided to visit a gallery, but I preferred a place where I could take photos. This was again a scene like created for a HDR. The whole bottom part is very light, with the building and the base of the statue very bright. On the other side, the sky was dark, and the statue has no lights pointing to it. But with HDR I got both.

If you are interested in seeing the comparison between original shot and final hdr, check out this post on my blog blog.hdrshooter.net/2012/02/27/last-night-in-madrid/

1955 Mercedes W 121 B II (190 SL) (41)
photo show
The Mercedes-Benz 190SL was a two door grand touring convertible with a removable hardtop. It was produced by Mercedes-Benz between May 1955 and February 1963. A prototype was first shown at the New York Auto Show of 1954.

The 190SL was sold alongside the faster, more expensive Mercedes-Benz 300SL, which it closely resembled both in its styling and in its fully independent suspension, with both cars having double wishbone suspensions at the front and swing axles at the rear. However, the 190SL did not use the 300SL's purpose-built tubular spaceframe W198 platform, but was instead built on the shortened monocoque R121 platform, which was modified from the W121 small saloon platform.

The 190SL was powered by a completely new, slightly oversquare 1.9L straight-four SOHC engine (Type M121 BII), that developed 105 PS (77 kW; 104 hp) (or 120 gross hp) that earned itself a reputation for not running that smoothly mostly due to the difficulty in properly synchronising the twin-choke dual Solex carburetors, and that, in detuned form, was later also used in the W120 180 and W121 190 models. In fact, the four cylinder engine block of the 190SL was based on the six cylinder engine of the 300 SL. The 85 mm bore was transferred unchanged from the larger engine to the smaller, although the stroke for the 190 SL was reduced from 88.0 mm to 83.6 mm.

The car was available either as a soft-top convertible (initially priced at DM 16,500/$ 3,998) or with removable hardtop (DM 17,650/$ 4,295). A nice option to be had was the third-passenger transversal seat that could even fit an adult. In its early life, the 190SL could also be had as a sports-racing model with small perspex windscreen and aluminum doors. In 1959, the hardtop's rear window was enlarged.

The 190SL was also referred to as the Nitribitt-Mercedes after the scandal surrounding the murder of the call girl Rosemarie Nitribitt, who owned a 190SL.

Both the 190SL and the 300SL were replaced by the Mercedes-Benz 230SL in 1963.

Leica D-Lux 5

Because of its large size, I've been using my 5D Mk2 less and less. So, I sold one of my Canon lenses to get the D-Lux 5.

I am not writing to endorse either product, or tell you which I think is better. The results are subjective and dependent of a photographer's skills. So, why the D-Lux 5 and not the Panasonic LX-5 which is essentially the same camera with a cheapter price tag?

I've owned both the D-Lux 4 and the Panasonic LX3. After shooting with an LX3 for well over a year, I sold it to purchase the D-Lux 4. I then sold the D-Lux 4 around when D-Lux 5 was announced.

I chose D-Lux 5 because:

1. I dislike the look of the Panasonic LX-5. I like the design of the D-Lux--it's simple, understated yet elegant. I'm a designer so, I do care about the looks.

In fact,I don't care about the "red dot." I would much prefer it without the Leica logo and just plain black.

2. I get a legitimate version of Adobe Lightroom--LR is an important tool to me, because I post-process most, if not all of my images.

3. I prefer how the D-Lux renders the colors and out of focus areas. The difference is not obvious unless you've shot with Leica lenses on Leica digital cameras.

Most people don't believe in the existence of the "Leica-look," nor care. But, IMO, it's there--through a little post-processing. Just like how Foveon images have their "look" when processed using Sigma Pro Photo Software, Leica D-Lux 4 has a smoother blur and more 3-Dness when post-processed vignette is added and through a little tweak of levels. Panasonic rendering simply do not have it (in the same way Leica does). Now, I haven't fully tested the D-Lux 5, but I presume it'll be similar to the D-Lux 4 results (and hopefully better).

4. D-Lux resale value is better. I tend to cycle through my digital cameras rather quickly.

Now, I'm looking forward to shooting with it and taking it with me to a trip to Myanmar. My thoughts on it will definitely be posted on Flickr.

Sunrise at Treasure Island

The weather was miserable on Saturday but on the off chance that it would clear up before sunrise, I drove down to Treasure Island and tried my hand at outdoor photography in over a year. For me, setting up in the pre-dawn for a photograph at sunrise is chicken soup for the soul.

The sun only broke through for a few minutes, but it was enough to take this photograph. By the time I jockeyed my camera for a satisfactory angle, I found out I was setting up in the water!

Since this lens cannot mount a ND filter, I stopped down as much as possible (f/22), set the ISO as low as possible (LO -1EV) and then took 10 exposures averaged in camera (multi-exposure mode), to emulate what a ND 1.2 would have done at f/16.

There is a small cheat here. In order to capture most of the sky and the horizon the way I wanted, I had to swipe part of the rocks in the foreground from a different (but identically set) exposure, technically this makes this a vertical panorama, but since the merge point is in the (multi-exposure integrated) water, I just blended them and avoided anything fancy.

There was an insane amount of dust on the senor and lens element. Because of this, I had to use the heal tool liberally. A digital grade ND brought back the rocks in the foreground and allowed the sky to be saturated and still hold contrast. The rest of the postprocessing was done to give it that postcard look and then toned back a small bit. u-points were used to keep the rock out of shadow and the buildings in North Beach (the only thing in direct reflected sunlight) from being totally blown out.

Narrowing the field - very recent coastal erosion at Skipsea, East Yorkshire
upload photo
Originally uploaded for the Guesswhere UK group.

Average coastal erosion rates for this part of the Holderness coast are in excess of 2.5 metres per year but sometimes a great chunk will go all at once. The main mechanism for the erosion is failure and collapse of the Skipsea Till (grey/brown in the photo) by rotational landslides. The slipped material is readily removed by the sea during storms and high tides, exposing a fresh cliff face which rapidly becomes unstable, eventually failing once more.

Rather good viewed large on black

Originally uploaded as No.4 of a jolly selection of Guesswhere UK puzzles.

This is the Bullhouse colliery minewater discharge into the River Don at Ecklands, near Penistone, West Yorkshire.

The mine worked the Halifax Hard seam and was drained by a 'water drift' - a long straight tunnel on a gentle downward gradient - which had it's outfall in the banks of the River Don as in the photo. The mine was abandoned in 1915.

Since this photo was taken, the Coal Authority has diverted the minewater, pumping it to treatment works and settling lagoons in an old quarry nearby, before allowing it to return to the river.

St. Johnsbury Athenæum (1871) – gallery wing (1873)

1171 Main Street, St. Johnsbury, Vermont USA • The St. Johnsbury Athenæum is a private, nonprofit public library and art gallery located in St. Johnsbury, Vermont. The Athenæum fills two roles: it serves the people of St. Johnsbury by enriching their lives, and it stands as a regional and national treasure - a monument to the nineteenth-century belief in learning. The Athenæum is a legacy of the Fairbanks Family of St. Johnsbury, inventors and manufacturers of the world's first platform scale, who gave the Athenæum to the trustees of the institution in 1871. With his wealth Horace Fairbanks created a center of culture for the people of his town - a true "athenaeum." – From the Athenæum's website.

The Athenæum's construction (1868-1873), its collection of American landscape paintings and books, its original role as a public library and free art gallery, and the industrial origins of the fortune that provided it, all contribute to the national significance of the building. The art collection contains a number of Hudson River School paintings. This unaltered building retains a strong, elegant Victorian flavor of the 19th century. – From the National Historic Landmark Statement of Significance.

☞ On July 18, 1996, the National Park Service added this structure to the National Register of Historic Places (#96000970).

☞ Also, on July 18, 1996, the National Park Service designated this structure a National Historic Landmark.

National Historic Landmarks are nationally significant historic places designated by the Secretary of the Interior because they possess exceptional value or quality in illustrating or interpreting the heritage of the United States. Today, fewer than 2,500 historic places bear this national distinction, [and only 17 in Vermont ]. Working with citizens throughout the nation, the National Historic Landmarks Program draws upon the expertise of National Park Service staff who work to nominate new landmarks and provide assistance to existing landmarks.

National Historic Landmarks are exceptional places. They form a common bond between all Americans. While there are many historic places across the nation, only a small number have meaning to all Americans--these we call our National Historic Landmarks.
– from the National Park Service.

I think it's more like 'lost in holga' but the present title has a sweet ring to it.

Know my ways

"Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: and see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting." Psalm 139:23-24 This is probably my favourite Psalm. That's not to say I don't appreciate other verses in the Bible, I do, but this chapter is particularly appealing and comforting to me somehow. Here's another photo I made from a verse in this chapter: even there shall thy Hand lead me

I was looking through some of my older photos today, and perhaps you would like to as well. slideshow If there is any good work in there, it is God that deserves the praise, since He is the only one able to give me the ability to do anything. I only hope I can use it all for His glory!

Nice Picture Sizes photos

1956 - 1970 Volvo Amazon (09)

The Volvo Amazon is a mid-size car manufactured by Volvo Cars from 1956 to 1970, and introduced in the USA, as the 122S at the New York International Auto Show in April 1959.

The Amazon shared both the wheelbase from its predecessor, the PV, as well as its tall posture and high H-point seating — while offering three model configurations: 2-door sedan, 4-door sedan and wagon. In 1959 Volvo provided front seat belts as standard equipment on all the cars, including the export models, becoming the world's first manufacturer to take this step — later becoming the first car featuring three-point seat belts.

When introduced, the car was called the Amason (with an 's'), which derives from the fierce female warriors of Greek mythology, the Amazons. Kreidler, German manufacturer of motorcycles had already registered the name, and the two companies agreed Volvo could only use the name domestically (i.e., within Sweden), modifying the spelling to Amazon. Subsequently, Volvo began its tri-digit nomenclature and the line became known as the 120 Series.
