Dungeness 21-04-2012

Dungeness 21-04-2012

Dungeness is a headland on the coast of Kent, England, formed largely of a shingle beach in the form of a cuspate foreland. It shelters a large area of low-lying land, Romney Marsh. Dungeness is also the name given to a “village” situated along the beach, and to an important ecological site on the same location. It is one of the largest expanses of shingle in the world. It is of international conservation importance for its geomorphology, plant and invertebrate communities and birdlife.

Dungeness is not truly a village, more a scattered collection of dwellings. Some of the homes, small wooden houses in the main, many built around old railway coaches, are owned and lived in by fishermen, whose boats lie on the beach; some are occupied by people trying to escape the pressured outside world. The shack-like properties have a high value on the property market.

Perhaps the most famous house is Prospect Cottage, formerly owned by the late artist and film director Derek Jarman. The cottage itself is painted black, with a poem, part of John Donne's “The Sunne Rising”, written on one side in black lettering. The garden however is the main attraction. Reflecting the bleak, windswept landscape of the peninsula, Derek Jarman's garden is made of pebbles, driftwood, scrap metal and a few hardy plants.

There is a remarkable and unique variety of wildlife living at Dungeness, with over 600 different types of plant (a third of all those found in Britain). It is one of the best places in Britain to find insects such as moths, bees and beetles, and spiders; many of these are very rare, some found nowhere else in Britain. The short-haired bumblebee, declared extinct in the UK nearly a decade ago, but which has survived in New Zealand after being shipped there more than 100 years ago, is to be reintroduced at Dungeness in the spring of 2010.

I am leaving Singapore for good on a couple of days. I have spent many hours in Bishan Park, and today I spent some time near Sunset there, for the last time.
On Saturday afternoons fishermen descend on the lakes in droves.
The way the setting sun illuminated the trees was really impressive here. If you look at the full size image you can see the way the bracketed images have captured this guy's casting action ;-)

Moscow, Russia appears at the center of this nighttime image photographed by one of the Expedition 30 crew members aboard the International Space Station, flying at an altitude of approximately 240 miles. A solar array panel for the space station is on the left side of the frame. The view is to the north-northwest from a nadir of approximately 49.4 degrees north latitude and 42.1 degrees east longitude, about 100 miles west-northwest of Volgograd. On the horizon in the background can be seen a small sample of Aurora Borealis, airglow and daybreak.

Polar Mesospheric Clouds Over Tibetan Plateau (NASA, International Space Station, 06/13/12)
earth image
Image by NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center
Polar mesospheric clouds in the Northern Hemisphere are featured in this image photographed by an Expedition 31 crew member on the International Space Station. In both the Northern and Southern Hemisphere, during their respective late spring and early summer seasons, polar mesospheric clouds are at the peak of their visibility. Visible from the ground during twilight, aircraft in flight, and the International Space Station, they typically appear as delicate shining threads against the darkness of space—hence their other name of noctilucent or "night-shining" clouds. On the same day this image was taken from the space station while it was passing over the night-darkened Tibetan Plateau, polar mesospheric clouds were also visible to aircraft flying above Canada. In addition to this still image, the space station crew took a time-lapse image sequence of polar mesospheric clouds several days earlier (June 5, 2012) while passing over western Asia; this is first such sequence of images of the phenomena taken from orbit. Polar mesospheric clouds form between 76-85 kilometers above the Earth's surface, when there is sufficient water vapor at these high altitudes to freeze into ice crystals. The clouds are illuminated by the setting sun while the ground surface below is in darkness, lending them their night-shining properties. In addition to the illuminated tracery of polar mesospheric clouds trending across the center of the image, lower layers of the atmosphere are also illuminated; the lowest layer of the atmosphere, the stratosphere, is indicated by dim orange and red tones. While the exact cause of formation of polar mesospheric clouds is still debated—dust from meteors, global warming, and rocket exhaust have all been suggested as contributing factors—recent research suggests that changes in atmospheric gas composition or temperature has caused the clouds to become brighter over time.

Originally the site of a medieval abbey, Syon was named after Mount Zion in the Holy Land.

For about the last 400 years it has been the London ancestral home of the Duke of Northumberland.

The "mechanics" of the card is the standard v-fold mechanism. CGI-ists should note that (although not obvious) the v-folds do not rise from the card in linear proportion to the rate at which the card is opened. I calculated/positioned the card at a number of "keyframe" positions between open and closed, and then smoothed the angle rotation tangents. The result looks convincing, although it is not wholly accurate.

Using angles that each range between 0° and 90° - as the card moves from closed to open, and as the v-folds move from flat to upright - the relationship between the angles is:

tan A = tan B /√2 - (when the upright "spread" of the v-fold is 90°)

- but I wasn't smart enough to program this into my CGI package automatically. Without taking into account this relationship, however, the two halves of the pop-ups do not exactly meet except when fully closed and open.

The images contained in the card are used under Creative Commons licenses. Certain usage is prohibited by some creators, except by specific permission. It's complicated. The copywrite holders are listed in the comments section below, together with links to the individual images which each have licensing details.

Art Deco Dura Photo Frames
picture frames
Here is a trio of very rare Machine Age photo frames made by The Dura Company of Toledo, Ohio. These picture frames were part of a giftware line that Dura did during the 1930's, and they look amazing when displayed with period, movie star photos. Industrial designer Helen Dryden was the art director of the company at one point in time. More information about The Dura Company can be found on my friend and neighbor's website here:

plasticliving.com/dura/d.html

The bases of the frames are made of bakelite, and the bases of both the circular frame and larger frame with the teardrop base have a streamline design. The frame on the right is super rare (this is the only one I've ever seen), and its metal and bakelite base has more of an Egyptian Revival or sunrise deco motif to it.

I have seen the bakelite bases in a few different colors, but black is the most common. The metal frames are made out of "Dura Metal," an alloy similar to chrome.
