1979 - 1981 Talbot Sunbeam Lotus (01)
photo images
In order to boost Sunbeam's image, a "hot hatch" version of the Sunbeam was launched at the 1978 British International Motor Show and Paris Motor Show, called Sunbeam Ti. It was based on the former Avenger Tiger (itself hailing back to the Sunbeam Tiger), a sporty version of the Avenger. The 1.6-litre (1598cc) engine fitted to the Sunbeam with twin Weber carburetors delivered 100 bhp (75 kW; 101 PS). It featured sporty two-tone paint and body kit, and was very sport-oriented, being stripped of equipment that would compromise its performance (and image). It proved quite popular with reviewers and enthusiasts, and helped to emphasize the advantages of Sunbeam's rear-wheel drive against more trendy (and spacious) front-wheel drive rivals.

Tony Pond driving his Talbot Sunbeam Lotus at the 1979 Manx International Rally.

Chrysler had also commissioned the sports car manufacturer and engineering company Lotus to develop a strict rally version of the Sunbeam. The resulting Sunbeam Lotus was based on the Sunbeam 1.6 GLS, but fitted with stiffer suspension, larger anti-roll bar and tougher gearbox casings. The drivetrain comprised an enlarged 2172 cc version of Lotus 2-litre, 16V slant four engine (the Sunbeam version being type 911, similar to Lotus 912), along with a ZF gearbox, both mounted in the car at Ludham airfield close to the Lotus facility in Hethel, Norfolk, where the almost-complete cars were shipped from Linwood. Final inspection, in turn, took place in Stoke, Coventry.

(Wikipedia)

- - -

Yahoo Censorship Still Sucks

This is the third time I've uploaded this photo. Best I can tell Yahoo has marked the other two versions of this NIPSA. NIPSA is a tool that Yahoo uses to screen your photos out of public search on Flickr.

NIPSA is a secret anonymous way that your photos are removed from public search without notifying you.

It is a flawed system and it sucks that Yahoo treats their paying customers so poorly.

I imagine that this photo will probably very shortly be moved out of public search on Flickr as well. After all Yahoo it's easier to try and silent your critics than dealing with messy issues like this.

Designed By Shane Warne

Image by Eva Rinaldi Celebrity and Live Music Photographer
Shane Warne aka 'The Spin King', continues to race ahead of the pack and reinvent himself, be it on Australian or European soil.

He's endorsed video and audio companies, online poker, and now toys (no, not dolls), cars... Hot Wheels cars from Mattel to be exact.

Today he appeared at a press conference in Surry Hills, Sydney, to tell us all about what he sees in Hot Wheels.

On the surface Warne looks to be a pretty good match. He loves his cars (owning a number of real sports cars in his private collection), is known for his fast women (now just one - lucky Liz), who has him in good shape thanks to the "Liz Effect", as Warnie puts it, and who knows what else is in the pipeline. Young men around the world may do well to note that Mr Warne has settled down now with the one lovely lady now and that commitment to the one lass can be a very good thing.

A couple of whispers overheard at today's presser went something like "Doesn't Mattel also do Barbie and Ken dolls (TM)." For the record there was nothing on Ken or Barbie.

The Hot Wheels 'Spin King' has supposed to be a bit of a secret, but we suspect that was all part of the media and marketing plan. You know, make something a secret, so it gets written and talked about. If that's the case, Mattel and Team Warnie have done their jobs well. Warne is understood to have "collaborated" with Mattel's Hot Wheels for about 6 months, and the financial terms of the deal are not being released, at least at this stage. It must be good, since Warne and his management are used to cranking deals with online poker brands and the like, and those don't come cheap.

'The Spin King' signature range designed by Australian sports stars sure looks hot (if your into toy cars).

This is not the virgin car deal for Mr Warne. Last year Warnie was named Lamborghini's Australian ambassador and gifted a 0,000 Murcielago as a "long-term loan car", and a couple of Lambos' were seen racing around East Sydney earlier today, so perhaps he was driving one of them. You can bet Warnie and Liz's kids are doing to have a ball of a time playing with all the toys they will be gifted by Mattel and Hot Wheels.

Warnie's press statements included something along the lines of "I've always has a passion for cars. I used to play with Hot Wheels cars as a kid, so when they offered me the chance to design my own, I jumped at it". Containing his excitement he also shared "I loved every minute of the design process and working with the team at hot Wheels was great fun. The 'Spin King' is a fusion between all of my favorite fast cars and its been great seeing my vision come to life". To Australian press (and public) he had an equally important message: "When Liz and I settle down in Melbourne please respect our privacy and don't throw rocks at our place at 2am in the morning. I've told Liz Melbourne is beautiful".

It was a hot looking brochure and media kit, but sadly no Hot Wheels car in the pack, but Christmas is coming, so here's hoping.

Thanks for the great photos Warnie. Sydney is the quick and the dead, and we did our best, so we're hoping you like them.

Verdict: Shane Warne and Mattel's Hot Wheels gets the green light. They are to hit stores in March 2012, and we're told they are worth the wait. Catch them if you can.

Some effects would be better used on a different image. There are some effects also that appear to do the same thing in different effect categories.

Ezimba also has a Facebook app, Google Android app, and a free iPhone app. Please note that the free iPhone app puts a small logo on the edited image. You can buy the paid ezimba app and not have the logo.

Dean Gallery 01

The Dean Gallery, Edinburgh, in its own grounds directly across from the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art (also in its own grounds in a leafy part of the city), having the two next to each other makes for a pleasant art space in a lovely part of town (if you are a tourist check the National Gallery of Scotland, more centrally located on the Mound, as there is often a free small bus that shuttles around from there to these galleries and back). The Dean is home to work from one of Edinburgh's famous artistic sons, Eduardo Paolozzi, including an incredible 2-storey high 'steel giant' statue (I love it, shame they're not fond of taking photos inside, would love to shoot it) and a recreation of his studio, complete with many pieces he donated himself, it's a real pleasure to stand and stare at the clutter of this studio of his, like a little glimpse into his mind and his inspirations, well worth a visit. Nice cafe too, as has the Gallery of Modern Art across the road.

Shots of the Ikon Gallery taken during my works 25th anniversary party.

I was officially taking photos for my company. I will copy those pictures and give the shots to them.

These are just architectural and sculptural interiors.

The Ikon Gallery is a English gallery of contemporary art located in Brindleyplace, Birmingham. It is housed in the former building of the Oozells Street Boarding School, designed by John Henry Chamberlain in 1877.

A square in Brindley place named after the nearby Oozells Street. It features a channel of still water lined by cherry trees. Paul de Monchaux designed the stone sculpted seats and pergola which are located in the square.

It is a Grade II listed building in a neo-gothic style.

1877, by Martin and Chamberlain. Former board school in a Ruskiman Gothic style. Red brick; tiled roof. Three storeys; 4 bays, those on the right and left advanced somewhat and lower than the others. That on the right is gabled, but that on the left apsidal. The inner 2 bays also gabled. The windows here arranged as triplets and, elsewhere, with pointed arches. In the tympana of the first floor windows some tiles. Above and behind the apsidal turret formerly a saddle-back roofed tower.

When listed in 1981 it was the Furniture Stores Of City Of Birmingham Education Department.

Oozells Street Boarding School - Heritage Gateway

Oozells Square. On the east, the Ikon Gallery. This was Oozells Street School, by Martin & Chamberlain. 1877 in Ruskinian Gothic with east wing added 1898. The confined site dictated a compact three-storey block. Renewed sash windows, stone and tile tympana in pointed openings, typical naturalistic sculpture. Converted by Levitt Bernstein, 1997. They reinstated the tower, removed in the 1960s, to the original design, and added glass north and south extensions for lifts and stairs: tough additions to a tough building. Inside, new and old spaces flow intriguingly. New floors inserted in the main classrooms and hall, but 19th century roofs visible on the second floor. Big wooden arch braces and iron ties, but the 1898 wing has iron arches. New entrance in the north west turret, cut in awkwardly.

From Pevsner Architectural Guides: Birmingham by Andy Foster.

bags, ink pens and status anxiety [a short discourse]

A few nice buy photo images I found:

bags, ink pens and status anxiety [a short discourse]
buy photo
.

luis vuitton, mont blanc and status anxiety [a short discourse].

.

when we talk about such things as louis vuitton luggage and mont blanc pens we are talking primarily [and almost entirely] about status symbols.

in a utilitarian sense, [and arguably an aesthetic sense] a louis vuitton bag or mont blanc pen is no more useful or beautiful than a similar product costing 10 or 20 times less.

given this fact, what is the purpose of such products as louis vuitton luggage and mont blanc ink pens?

the real purpose behind products such as these is not necessarily to please the owner, their social utility resides in what they communicate to everybody else who looks at these products and thence whoever owns them.

and if the viewer is aware of the language, the message that the status symbol 'should' send to the culturally initiated, then they may read the story.

.

stories through product.

every single thing we own, every single thing we wear, every single thing in our homes tells a story about us.

owned objects tell stories about those who own them.

though some objects have developed into 'personal advertisements' which behave in a very particular way.

many [usually expensive] objects are bought primarily not as useful or even beautiful things, they are bought simply as objects to be seen by other people.

to be clear again, these objects are called status symbols.

with respect to a piece of louis vuitton luggage, or a mont blanc pen, there are no good utilitarian, qualitative or aesthetic reasons whatsoever for buying these products.

they are not even necessarily 'the best' of that particular product a consumer can possibly buy.

there are products that serve exactly the same purpose, and work equally as well as those products which are status symbols, but cost considerably less.

but these products do not function successfully as status symbols.

this is because they do not communicate those things which the buyer of a status symbol wants their purchased status symbol to communicate.

a mont blanc pen or louis vuitton bag exists primarily as a signal; it exists as a recognisable physical manifestation and personal advertisement of the perceived status of the consumer that owns it.

again, the status symbol product very often functions no better in any utile sense than their non-status-symbol equivalents, but costs ten, twenty or thirty times more.

odd.

.

a strange thing regarding status symbols.

of course, the strange thing about status symbols is that the people looking at them need to know exactly what the object is worth to receive the signal the owner wishes to send.

they need to know exactly what the status symbol is meant to mean.

what that status symbol is meant to say.

if a person owns an £800 mont blanc pen, and the person looking at the pen is entirely unaware of the brand or the ludicrously high price, then the pen simply becomes the same as every other pen.

when the viewer is unaware of what the status symbol 'should' be saying, the status symbol ceases entirely to be effective in terms of communicating the correct social and status signal to the viewer.

it is reduced to the status of base product, and as such communicates nothing other than the fact it is yet another product. yet another purchased object amongst countless other purchased objects.

this is why advertising and fashion media outlets make sure as many people as is possible know the correct signal any given status symbol should communicate.

.

product - the lingua franca of the socially anxious.

in effect what we have are groups of peers signalling to each other their social status using purchased products.

in order to understand french people i need to be able to speak french.

in order to understand what a person's status symbols are saying about that person, i need to understand the language of their status symbols.

so it is not any notion of quality or craftsmanship that makes a status symbol expensive, it is its power to tell those who understand the status symbol something [often entirely false] about the owner.

alain de botton proposes the theory of status anxiety in his exceptional book of the same name.

i think the behaviour patterns that come about as a result of status anxiety have existed for a very long time indeed.

that said, i think we now live in an age where status anxiety and conspicuous consumption can be said to be amongst the primary driving forces of almost every human being in any given developed nation.

as i mentioned, much more often than not, the function of a status symbol has little or nothing to do with its utilitarian, or indeed, aesthetic value.

it exists to tell other people exactly how much you spent in buying it.

this seems pitiful to me.

are the vast majority of people so personally and socially insecure that they need to commit themselves to purchase ever more products to ensure their position and status in their given peer group.

once again, i assert that these people are displaying the symptoms of mental illness.

.

we buy to be who we are not.

as we can see with the preposterous rise of the 'designer label'.

anything can be called a designer product.

a pen; a car, a table, a pair of sunglasses, an item of clothing, a camera, running shoes, a handbag, and item of crockery, and item of cutlery.

anything can be called a designer product.

anything can be a status symbol.

you simply have to convince people of the correct 'story' it tells with regard to the owner.

once you can do this successfully, you can sell any monkey buyer 'shit with a ribbon on' [as my father used to call products of this nature].

.

a distant acquaintance twice removed has a daughter.

a few years ago the daughter found herself in a position of owning a great deal of money in terms of personal debt. thousands and thousands of pounds.

she asked her parents if they would buy her a mont blanc pen as a birthday present for her.

once again, i have a say that this is, to me, mental illness.

i can see no other sensible name to give these patterns of behaviour.

my apologies to natalia :)

Smiths Row, The Market Cross, Cornhill, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk IP33 1BT
Tel: +44 (0) 1284 762081

We are happy to welcome Australian artists Tanya Schultz, Nicole Andrijevic and John Kassab to Smiths Row in what is their first major British show. Schultz and Andrijevic have worked in collaboration since 2007 using the alias Pip & Pop and this is their second collaboration with sound artist Kassab.

Sweet sweet galaxy is a unique installation depicting an infinite psychedelic landscape. An amalgamation of numerous materials including coloured sugar, fine sand, cake decorations, origami, found objects, LED lights and sound, this colourful sensory kingdom will be constructed directly in the gallery space in early January.

The soundscape, created in collaboration with Melbourne-based John Kassab, adds another layer of immersion to the audience experience and sense of being transported to a faraway or imagined place. Whilst the soundscape adds to the narrative of the imagined landscape, interpreting the sounds with sugar has been central to Pip & Pop's process when working with John.

The sugar used in this exhibition has been kindly donated by Silverspoon. As the sole producers of homegrown British sugar the company supports 1200 East Anglian beet farmers. According to Dan Gough of Silverspoon: "the sugar used in this exhibition was grown an average of 30 miles away from the gallery".

About the Japanese Red Cross Society

The Japanese Red Cross are one of three major fundraising organisaitions based in Japan (the other two being the Japanese broadcaster NHK and the Red Feather Central Community Chest of Japan - originally a post World War II re-building organisation). You can download two english language reports relating to the disaster from the Japanese Red Cross website:

Operations Update No.1 - 13th April 2011 [.pdf file, retrieved 17th May 2011]
Operations Update No.2 - 6th May 2011 [.pdf file, retrieved 17th May 2011]

Over two months on, the needs of many of the survivors remain desperately basic. There has been an increased incidence of pneumonia and associated fatalities. As well as helping with practical and medical requirements, the Japanese Red Cross Society are helping people deal with "Shell Shock" / Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and further developing services to address these issues.

Perhaps most impressively, they helped quickly set up a management structure to co-ordinate help from all the major fundraisers, a committee including academics and representatives from the 15 most badly affected prefectures [local governments]. The pre-existing local Red Cross chapters [branches] are helping with governance.

Although Japan has a large economy, and domestically the japanese have been hugely generous towards aid efforts, like everywhere else, many people of course are not personally rich. There is still epic upheaval. Much of welfare is normally provided by family and community, a system that breaks down when whole barrios are fragmented and diminished. Services like adoption and fostering, for example - normally always done by relatives - are having to be developed. A planning policy of building schools on higher ground saved many children, but even after encouraging teachers back out of retirement, there is still a shortage of experienced teachers. Japan is mostly mountains and sea, with very little spare land suitable for building, and so - while rebuilding takes place - temporary accommodation has had to be built on land normally reserved for other activities, for example on school playgrounds.

If you enjoy shopping in support of the Japanese Red Cross Society, you might also like Tomodachi Calling, a cafepress web store / shop (recommend by a fellow flickrer schmid91, who helped document the aftermath of the tsunami in Ishinomaki Myagi prefecture).

About the decorative hexagonal origami gift box

The box is made up from 12 square origami papers - 6 for the lid and 6 for the base. No cutting, glue or adhesive tape is used.

Although Japan has a long tradition of paper folding, the design of the box is modern, by Tomoko Fuse 布施 知子, who is a renown unit origami designer and artist. Unit origami is a method of building up models using pre-folded components or units.

If you are an accurate and consistent paper folder, but are new to unit origami, and you would like to make your own box, I would recommend her book "Origami Boxes: Moribana Style" [# ISBN-10: 0870408216 - # ISBN-13: 978-0870408212] as an excellent introduction. Connecting the units together can be a bit fiddly at first, and the book also includes designs for more simple square and triangular boxes, which give the opportunity to practice and develop the skills needed for doing the final assembly.

(Until Asimo gets a bit more nimble fingered, the box is unlikely to flood the market anytime soon...)

If you get the bug, she has also created and written about very much more complex models. "Unit Origami: Multidimensional Transformations" [ISBN-10: 0870408526 - ISBN-13: 978-0870408526] is considered a classic text on the subject.

Paper making was a traditional supplemental business of farmers in Japan during the winter. The very cold water during that season enabled the fibres in the pulp to be soaked without becoming subject to decay, and some also argue that cold shrinks the fibres, creating a finer, crisper paper.

The gift that brightens my workplace
photo gift
Image by gwilmore (I HATE THE NEW LAYOUT!)
Shortly after I arrived at work this morning, Commissioner Myra Harris of the Maricopa County Superior Court called my office and left a message for me. In a pleasant and cheerful voice, she instructed me to come see her in her chambers, where an unspecified surprise awaited me. I walked over right away and learned that the surprise in question was the pillow you see here. It measures about 12x12 inches, and Commissioner Harris made it herself. She had wanted to give it to me on the evening I performed the bolero with Angie, but she was sick all that week and therefore unable to attend the event. I said that was fine, because the award of the gift was in close enough proximity to the dance performance that we could consider them to be linked.

I was absolutely delighted with this thoughtful little gift, which obviously required some loving effort on the part of its giver. Commissioner Harris told me that the lady in this stitched profile was Angie, who, unfortunately, might not be able to recognize herself in it. The man, obviously, was meant to be me. The Commissioner's clerk, who was present during this exchange, quipped that the picture was perforce inaccurate because the pens were missing from my pocket; I responded that on the contrary, this made it all the more accurate, because Angie would have confiscated any and all pens from my pocket long before we even got around to forming a dance frame together.

(That deserves an explanation. Like the nerd I freely admit being, I routinely carry several pens in my shirt pocket, usually at least three and sometimes as many as half a dozen. For the past several months, whenever I have shown up for a dance lesson with those pens in my pocket and my Superior Court employee badge hanging around my neck, Angie has confiscated pens and badge from me at the beginning of the lesson and placed them on a nearby table for the duration. She claims they throw me off balance, but I believe she really does it to amuse and entertain me and make me smile -- and in that case, what can I say? It works! So I play along with the little ritual, and occasionally add a twist of my own, such as the time I proudly informed her that I had intentionally put on an Angie-proof shirt that morning. She looked me over and asked what that meant, and I pointed out that it was a long-sleeve pullover shirt with no breast pocket, and therefore no pens available for her to confiscate. Then I said "nya-nya!" to her, at which she expressed great indignation to the studio manager and the owner, both of whom happened to be passing by at the moment. She did not appear to get a great deal of sympathy from them, by the way.)

The Commissioner told me I should use this pillow to support my back during my conferences, but I quickly decided otherwise, at least for the time being. The legend sewn into the pillow got me to thinking that if real men can dance, then it logically follows that John Wayne, Jack Palance, Gary Cooper, and Charles Bronson, along with others of their kind, must have been terrific dancers, because they definitely were real men themselves. So I decided to place the pillow next to my computer screen, in full view of the litigants who attend my conferences, in order to allow them to see it and be made aware of who and what they are dealing with. Let them mess with me, and I am liable to break into a foxtrot, or perhaps a bolero!

Speaking of which, the notes you see taped to my wall were the subject of this photo a couple of weeks ago. I placed them there on the day of the performance so I could glance at them from time to time throughout my workday as I thought through the routine. I have left them there because the performance ended up being such a happy experience for me, notwithstanding my initial impression that it had been a disaster. But as things turned out, it was a true case of mourning being turned into joy. (See Jeremiah 31:13.)
