Goggle Glasses

With Google Fellow Sebastian Thrun at lunch today.

These cool glasses come with embeddded prisms that detect head rotation to immerse you in an alternate reality or 3D projection, riffing off objects in the real world... (more on Google Glasses)

Some notes from Sebastian's talk on the founding of the Udacity MOOC:

"I was deeply inspired by seeing Sal Khan’s presentation on Khan Academy, on Youtube. Each of his videos reached more students than I would teach in a lifetime at Stanford.

I knew ftom Google that the average YouTube video view is 9 seconds.

Before we opened the first AI class, Norvig thought we would get 500 students, and I was more optimistic; I thought we might get 10,000. We went online with a paragraph description. By Sunday, we had 20,000. On Monday I got a call, as I forgot to tell Stanford abut the project. We then had many discussions!

In the end, we had 160,000 students register internationally. There were more students in Lithuania alone taking the class than Stanford students.

The top 412 students were outside Stanford. The top Stanford student was number 413.

Our all-in cost was 6 cents per student."

Taken with Sony A700 + Sigma 17-70mm F2,8-4,5 DC Asp. IF Makro

As I gathered enough mony for it (Chritsmas+birthday on 05.01.) I went out yesterday evening to buy my Sigma 70-200mm 2.8 HSM II (to make it short; those lens-producers like to put thousends of letters into the lens names).

As the name suggests its autofocus is driven via a hypersonic motor. Hence AF-Operation becomes almost noiseless and faster. I weren't able to test the image quality till now but the build quality is great and the AF rocks, although I expected it to be faster.

UPDATE: I used the great weather to take some photos in the snow and this lens rocks! It might not be as sharp as the similar priced Tamron 70-200mm 2.8 but the HSM-autofocus is fun and after stopping down a little bit it gets razor sharp. In addition you always are held to be a newspaper photographer. As I walked by a guy said to his friend: "Damn, we're too late for the HNA [local newspaper]".

Okay, it's not really a house...more of a cottage. A small one. But home!

Update, April 2007: that cute cottage turned out to be filled with mold. It made us both ill. We moved out in February, and I still can't look at the place without shuddering. Therefore, I've decided to submit it to the Photoshop Contest group as the Week 102 raw image. I hope to see some truly ghoulish transformations!

Here are some boys taking part in physical exercises at the Boys Club, run from Cocks' own home. nd [1910]

William A Cocks of 18, St Mary's Terrace, Ryton, was a well known local watch and clock maker and a keen amateur archaeologist and photographer. His father, John Cocks was a Newcastle Bank official who wrote for the Hexham Courant as "Old Cross" for many years, and was closely involved with Ryton Congregational Church. William Cocks was also probably a member of the Church and recorded its activities.

Title : “Looking back”
Series : On the road to Ashulia
Size : 20” by 36”
Medium : Mixed media on canvas
Price: currently not for sale

The teasing, taunting and sometimes worse that women have to endure while on the roads is a reality in quite a few cities in our world today. I blame cinema and fear of violence for this increase in harassment.

Say No to crimes against women.

This series is inspired by a visit to Ashulia with a couple of friends. Anil Advani captured some great moments on camera, and has generously allowed me to use these images as references. One year and a lot of work later, these people have developed personalities in my imagination and I feel I know them well.

Sweet, Sweet Galaxy by Pip & Pop

Smiths Row, The Market Cross, Cornhill, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk IP33 1BT
Tel: +44 (0) 1284 762081

We are happy to welcome Australian artists Tanya Schultz, Nicole Andrijevic and John Kassab to Smiths Row in what is their first major British show. Schultz and Andrijevic have worked in collaboration since 2007 using the alias Pip & Pop and this is their second collaboration with sound artist Kassab.

Sweet sweet galaxy is a unique installation depicting an infinite psychedelic landscape. An amalgamation of numerous materials including coloured sugar, fine sand, cake decorations, origami, found objects, LED lights and sound, this colourful sensory kingdom will be constructed directly in the gallery space in early January.

The soundscape, created in collaboration with Melbourne-based John Kassab, adds another layer of immersion to the audience experience and sense of being transported to a faraway or imagined place. Whilst the soundscape adds to the narrative of the imagined landscape, interpreting the sounds with sugar has been central to Pip & Pop's process when working with John.

The sugar used in this exhibition has been kindly donated by Silverspoon. As the sole producers of homegrown British sugar the company supports 1200 East Anglian beet farmers. According to Dan Gough of Silverspoon: "the sugar used in this exhibition was grown an average of 30 miles away from the gallery".

1958 Oldsmobile Super 88 Fiesta Hardtop Station Wagon (02)
photo show
The Oldsmobile 88 (a.k.a. Eighty-Eight) is a full-size car sold by the Oldsmobile division of General Motors and produced from 1949 until 1999. From 1950 to 1974 the 88 was the division's top-selling line, particularly the entry-level models such as the 88 and Dynamic 88. The 88 series was also an image leader for Oldsmobile, particularly in the early years (1949–51) when it was one of the best performing automobiles thanks to its relatively small size, light weight and advanced overhead-valve high-compression V8 engine originally designed for the larger and more luxurious 98 series but dropped into the smaller six-cylinder Oldsmobile 76 body, creating what was considered the predecessor of musclecars of the 1960s.

A large number of variations in nomenclature were seen over this long model run—Delmont, Delta, Dynamic, Jetstar, Starfire, Super, Holiday, L/S, LSS, Celebrity, and Royale were used at various times with the 88 badge, and Fiesta appeared on some station wagons in the 1950s and 1960s. The name was more commonly shown as numbers in the earlier years ("Delta 88", for example) and was changed to spell-out "Eighty Eight" starting in 1989.

The Oldsmobile Eighty Eight was produced in Wentzville, Missouri; Flint, Michigan; and Lake Orion, Michigan.

1930 Mercedes-Benz SSK Black Bear (02)
photo show
The Mercedes-Benz SSK is a roadster built by German automobile manufacturer Mercedes-Benz between 1928 and 1932. Its name is an acronym of Super Sport Kurz, with the last word being the German for "short", a reference to the fact that the car was based on the earlier Mercedes-Benz S, but with 19 inches (480 mm) chopped from the chassis to make the car lighter and more agile for racing. It was the last and greatest car designed for the company by the brilliant engineer Ferdinand Porsche, before he left to pursue the foundation of his own company. The SSK's extreme performance—with a top speed of up to 120 miles per hour (190 km/h), it was the fastest car of its day and numerous competitive successes made it one of the most highly regarded sports cars of its era. The S/SS/SSK line was one of the nominees in the penultimate round of voting for the Car of the Century award in 1999, as chosen by a panel of 132 motoring journalists and a public internet vote.

Fewer than 40 SSKs were built during its production span, of which about half were sold as Rennwagen (racing cars). Fitted with a supercharged seven litre straight-6 engine producing 200–300 metric horsepower (150–220 kW) and over 500 lb·ft (680 N·m) of torque (depending on the state of tune), it was driven to victory in numerous races, including the 1929 500 Miles of Argentina, the 1929 and 1930 Cordoba Grands Prix, the 1931 Argentine Grand Prix, and, in the hands of legendary Grand Prix racing driver Rudolf Caracciola, the 1929 British Tourist Trophy race, the 1930 Irish Grand Prix, the 1931 German Grand Prix, and the 1931 Mille Miglia.

Many were crashed while racing and subsequently cannibalised for parts, and as a result there are now almost 100 replicas using components donated from original vehicles. Only four or five entirely original models remain, and their scarcity and rich heritage make them among the most sought after cars in the world; a 1929 model was auctioned at Bonhams in Chichester in September 2004 for UK£4.17 million (US.4 million), making it the second most expensive automobile ever sold. Another SSK, a streamlined "Count Trossi"-bodied version owned and restored by fashion designer Ralph Lauren, has won best of show at both the 1993 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance and the 2007 Concorso D’Eleganza Villa d’Este.

(Wikipedia)

Daily App Experiment #207 "Caught" - while shooting a long exposure with #SlowShutter, I somehow ended with some interesting extra artifacts in my image. I think it has something to do with accidentally tipping my tripod at the end of the exposure... The SlowShutter's HDR possibly did something weird with the patterns on the shirt of someone on the escalator. Whatever happened, I used Camera+'s Clarity setting to help bring out the accidental textures. I created to versions of the image and used #icamerahdr to combine and tweak them. #appsperiment #daily_appsperiment
