The Ford Anglia is a British car designed and manufactured by Ford in the United Kingdom. Production ceased in 1967. Photographed at the Lincoln Home Historic Site "Trunk or Treat" in Springfield, Illinois on October 29, 2010.

You are invited to stay and browse through my stream. Here's a quick index to my little corner of Flickr:

Automobile Photographs: This is a very large collection of images whose primary, but not exclusive, focus is on American automotive classics. Images are organized by decade, by manufacturer, and by topics (such as convertibles, station wagons, muscle cars, etc.)

Central Illinois (except Springfield): Central Illinois (except Springfield): Photos relating to the middle section of the "Land of Lincoln" (except for the Capital City of Springfield) may be found in this collection. Every city and town I've photographed is contained within its own set, and rural (as in "countryside") photographs are grouped by county.

Springfield, Illinois: All of my photographs of Springfield and the Abraham Lincoln Sites are in this collection. For the City of Springfield, there are separate sets for the Capitol Complex, Downtown (including the Old State Capitol), Neighborhoods, Parks, Illinois State Fairgrounds (and past State Fairs), and more. Photographs of Lincoln sites include the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, Lincoln Home National Historic Site, Lincoln Tomb, and so on. Also in the Lincoln "All About Abe" (Set) are a few Lincoln sites not located in Springfield.

The Illinois State Fair: My collection of photographs of the Illinois State Fair. The fair offers something for everyone. Grab a corn dog and lemon shake-up, and come take a look!

Beyond Central Illinois: Other locales in the United States and Canada including New York, Chicago, San Francisco and Seattle.

In addition to my location-based sets, here are links to some "topical" collections and sets I've put together:

Barbers & Barber Shops: Traditional barbers and barber shops are on the endangered species list. But there are still plenty to be found if you go looking for them.

Almost Everything Else. Check It Out!!!: Included topics range from man's first walk on the moon to small town schools and churches, and from Soft-Coated Wheaten Terriers (our favorite breed) to things that are abandoned, neglected, weathered, or rusty.

Monk with bib

Monk with bib

Today’s photo is a shot of Jizo (Gee-Zou), the guardian deity of children in Japan. It’s very common for them to sport bibs like this. Stylish.

More commonly called O-jizo-sama out of respect, he is just about the most beloved figure in Buddhism in Japan. His statues are everywhere. I do mean that. They are very common along most roads, in hillsides, along random paths, in graveyards, and on and on.

Jizo is seen as the guardian of children, especially children who have died before their parents. In Japanese mythology, he helps children cross the river Sanzu (think of this as the river Styx in Greek mythology) on their way to the afterlife, which they are unable to do by themselves.

Jizo is usually dressed with a bib to show this connection with saving children. Smaller jizo statues in graveyards are dressed in baby clothes, often with toys nearby. The clothes and toys are from grieving parents who donate their child’s things as a way to thank Jizo for watching over their child in the afterlife.

He's not exclusively prayed to for children, however. People might commonly stop at one of his statues on the roadside, bow and say a simple prayer of thanks for life. In Buddhism, he is a bodhisattva. Think of that as someone who has achieved enlightenment and out of compassion has sworn to help everyone else achieve the same.

There are all variety of statues, some depicting Jizo as a baby, some as an adult, and some like the above.

Comments/questions? What do you think? Let me know in the comments.

Bribing the gods?
photo software
Today’s photo is a donation board, more or less, at Rokusho Shrine, the Matsudaira & Tokugawa family shrine. A way to gain favor with the gods?

There are various things donations can get you at a shrine. You might simply be blessed by the head priest, you might get to drink some sacred sake (called miki), you might be able to take part in special rituals. Big donors get special plaques with their name on them, announcing for all to see that they are cool with god.

Bribery? Naw — just greasing the wheels a bit.

2008 Veritas RS III (01)
photo show
After a virtual disappearance from motor racing and automotive engineering for nearly 50 years, a small company known as Vermot AG] plans on "resurrecting" the Veritas name on a planned model known as the RS III.

In 2001, a concept known as the Veritas RS3 was shown. With some design cues taken from boats, in which Vermot explored the market at one time, it was well received. It used a BMW sourced 6.0 liter V-12, producing 670 horsepower (500 kW).

In 2008, it was announced that Vermot AG was to take serious efforts towards producing the RS III.

Production and testing began in early 2008, with the RS III spotted testing on tracks in May 2008, and Vermot AG has released a general release date for the end of 2008. It runs on a BMW sourced 5.0 liter V-10 that generates 600 horsepower (450 kW). Weight will be kept down to 2,360 pounds due to the extensive use of light materials, and performance figures of 0–60 in 3.6 seconds and a top speed of 216 miles per hour (348 km/h) are likely, according to Vermot AG. Production will be around 50 models per year.

In 2009, at London's Salon Privé, Veritas RS III Roadster super sports car won the "Best Super Car 2009" award. Strictly limited hand production of only 30 vehicles started by Vermot in Gelsdorf.

(Wikipedia)

- - -

Rope Swing - Morgan, SA
image shack
A rope swing out into the river at Morgan, South Australia. This was in the 'back yard' of a shack I stayed at with some friends over the weekend (owned by a friend-of-a-friend). If you look to the right hand side of the image near the tree, there is a slippery dip. Climbing up onto this while holding the roap ensures a decent swing into the river.

Yes, I had a go. Many goes. :D

Preto Velho.
image shack
This is the full frame photo of a cropped version
you can find at the other end of this stream.

It is a photo of the original print which I found
under a pile of images kept in our Santos apartment.
It is large (60x80cm), so this image has all the
details of the original.

I am posting this since, as mentioned, the man
was an ex-slave and caretaker of the Officers
training camp in Sao Paulo.

He is a pure blood, note the size of his hands.
The mosquito on his head was left alone since
I did not wish to disturb and miss his distant look!
He is over 100 years old in this image.
This information is gathered from historical
fact and the photo was taken in 1986.

The background is dried bush which surrounds
his shack. Preto velho is not offensive since he
had no name when he was found, so he chose
the name himself.

If you wish, I suggest you download the full
version which will be almost, if not, life size.

MV Development Way (Details)
photo development
Sorry for the poor quality. This picture was taken during a downpour in the middle of Vancouver Harbour while I was in a little boat.

Quote from ruthlesscrab: www.flickr.com/photos/27357821@N00/

"Look closely at the blue vessel -- her bow over on the left, and her stern and wheelhouse waay over on the right. What's in between is underwater, and two vessels are being coaxed onto her. After floating the cargo into position, the deck rises out of the water again, and the cargo is fastened in place.

The vessels are the Straits Logger (a self loading/unloading barge commissioned in 1964), and the Haida Brave (self loading/unloading cargo ship commissioned in 1978). At least three other smaller vessels are on top of the Straits Logger -- you can see them better in this detail shot.

Here's a beautiful photo of the Haida Brave taken by Flickr member Colin Sands, and here is a fabulous look at the Straits Logger in action, full to bursting with logs in 2005, by Flickr member Aqua Green.

Wish I had taken a photo of the Development Way before loading -- it looked so strange to see the bow and stern...and just a long blank space in between. Fortunately, my new contact Roger was in the right place at the right time, and you can see his image of the vessel without cargo right here.

Following is a little research:
The Development Way is a 25,000 DWT semi-submersible ship. She is the first self-propelled semi-submerged ship remoulded from liquid petroleum gas/chemical tanker.

She has 44 water ballast tankers and four main pumps as ballasting systems. The maximum submerging draft reaches 18 meters. It takes four hours from the maximum draft of 18 meters to designed draft of 9.3 meters and it takes less than four hours for the reverse.

To position the floating items, the ship deck is equipped with four sets of winches separately along port and starboard sides in bow and stern sides. In order to assist loading/unloading, the ship is also equipped with one forklift, two cranes and a number of fastening, welding and cutting device."

Description: William Jennings Bryan (seated at left) being interrogated by Clarence Seward Darrow, during the trial of the State of Tennessee v. John Thomas Scopes, July 20, 1925. That Monday afternoon, because of the extreme heat, Judge Raulston moved court proceedings outdoors. The session was held on a platform that had been erected at the front of the Rhea County Courthouse to accommodate ministers who wanted to preach during the time of the trial. Defense lawyers for Scopes (John R. Neal, Arthur Garfield Hays, and Dudley Field Malone) are visible seated to the extreme right. One of the men at left, with his back to the photographer, appears to be Scopes. The court reporters are seated at the table.

Collection: Tennessee v. John Thomas Scopes Trial Photographs - During 1925, Watson Davis (1896-1967), Science Service managing editor, took numerous photographs while covering the State of Tennessee v. John Thomas Scopes trial as a reporter. In what was dubbed "The Trial of the Century," Scopes was tried and convicted for violating a state law prohibiting the teaching of the theory of evolution. William Jennings Bryan served on the prosecution team, and Clarence Darrow defended Scopes. Almost eighty years later, the nitrate negatives, including portraits of trial participants, and images from the trial itself and significant places in Dayton, were discovered in archival material donated to the Smithsonian by Science Service in 1971. Marcel C. LaFollette, an independent scholar, historian and Smithsonian volunteer uncovered these rare, previously unpublished photographs of the 1925 Tennessee vs. John Scopes "Monkey Trial" in the Smithsonian Institution Archives (SIA). In 2005, SIA restored fifty-two of the negatives with funds granted by the Smithsonian Women's Committee. Included here are thirty-nine of the images. All images belong to the Record Unit 7091: Science Service, Records, 1902-1965 collection of SIA. All photographs were taken by Watson Davis, Managing Editor of Science Service, while he was in Dayton, Tennessee, June 4-5, 1925, and July 10-22, 1925. LaFollette identified and dated each of these images, and has published a new book highlighting these and other images from the trial entitled, Reframing Scopes: Journalists, Scientists, and Lost Photographs from the Trial of the Century, University Press of Kansas, 2008.
