The German Postal Services commissioned in 1961 / 1963 Volkswagen to design them a postal van that would suit their needs.

VW started off with the Karmann produced (Type 151) Beetle Cabriolet as basis for the van due to its strength in build but later turned to the Karmann Ghia (Type 14) for basis as it was wider.

It was agreed Franz Knobel & Sohn GmbH (later called Westfalia Werke) would build the vehicles for VW & the Deutsche Post, Swiss Post Offices & Lufthansa.

Its official name was Volkswagen Type 147 Kleinlieferwagen (small van) but due to its funny and badly proportioned shape it was affectionately called "Fridolin". From 1964 to July 1974, 6139 were produced.

Harlow Parson collaborative portrait of teenage comic book author, Ariel Schrag, 1996. (oil on canvas - 40" x 30")

In 1996, San Francisco, Ruth and I we saw the comic book, "Awkward", written and drawn by 16 year-old, Berkeley High School student, Ariel Schrag. We contacted her with an offer to paint her portrait. Visiting her home after school, we asked her to draw a cartoon of her "dream boy". As we watched, she completed it quickly and confidently. We pinned it to the wall, took a Polaroid of her standing beside the drawing. Ariel approved the photo, we took it to our studio and over the course of a month, we made a painting study from the photo, by each of us drawing on an enlarged photo-copies of the Polaroid, then combining the best parts of our drawings into a gridded collage. Marking a corresponding grid on stretched canvas, we each painted a randomly chosen 50% of grid squares. We proudly delivered the completed portrait to her, wishing her every happiness in her life.

29-01-10 I am writing this from a train bound for Edinburgh. I am on my way there for a friend's stag do! So tomorrows picture may be a bit shaky. I'm going to try and keep this brief as I don't know how long my battery is going to last. This is a photo of the roof of York station. I have processed it as a HDR to bring out the whole dynamic range. I hope it doesn' look too bad. I'm not a huge fan of the HDR technique but in this instance I needed to bring out the dynamic range. I have also included a B&W treatment of the same shot as I couldn't decide between them! Shots were processed with photomatix, Colour and Silver Efex Pro

Manual Page Read: I left it at home! I'll just have to read 3 pages on Monday.

Images Viewed: I bought a copy of Amateur Photographer and I have been reading it on the train.

I didn’t want to oversharpen because the thing that the AF system tried to focus on was Rob’s cheek.

Sweet, Sweet Galaxy by Pip & Pop

Smiths Row, The Market Cross, Cornhill, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk IP33 1BT
Tel: +44 (0) 1284 762081

We are happy to welcome Australian artists Tanya Schultz, Nicole Andrijevic and John Kassab to Smiths Row in what is their first major British show. Schultz and Andrijevic have worked in collaboration since 2007 using the alias Pip & Pop and this is their second collaboration with sound artist Kassab.

Sweet sweet galaxy is a unique installation depicting an infinite psychedelic landscape. An amalgamation of numerous materials including coloured sugar, fine sand, cake decorations, origami, found objects, LED lights and sound, this colourful sensory kingdom will be constructed directly in the gallery space in early January.

The soundscape, created in collaboration with Melbourne-based John Kassab, adds another layer of immersion to the audience experience and sense of being transported to a faraway or imagined place. Whilst the soundscape adds to the narrative of the imagined landscape, interpreting the sounds with sugar has been central to Pip & Pop's process when working with John.

The sugar used in this exhibition has been kindly donated by Silverspoon. As the sole producers of homegrown British sugar the company supports 1200 East Anglian beet farmers. According to Dan Gough of Silverspoon: "the sugar used in this exhibition was grown an average of 30 miles away from the gallery".

1956 Goliath GP 900 Brochure (03)

Goliath was a German car brand started in 1928 and which was part of the Borgward group. Goliath was based in Bremen and specialized in three-wheeler cars and trucks and medium-sized cars.

The company Goliath-Werke Borgward & Co. was created by Carl F. W. Borgward and Wilhelm Tecklenburg in 1928. The first models were three-wheelers trucks derived from the Blitzkarren previously built by Borgward. The first passenger car was the Goliath Pionier in 1931, which still had three wheels and a one-cylinder engine. Until 1934, 4000 of these small cars where produced in various types of body. The Pionier was considered as a forerunner of the Hansa models 400 and 500.

These were front-wheel-drive two-door sedans.

Goliath GP700 (1950–1957) — two-cylinder, inline, two-stroke, water-cooled, transverse engine (anticipating the Mini and many recent cars). In 1952 introduced Bosch direct fuel injection, around the same time as the Gutbrod Superior 600; they were the first two cars to use this technology.

Goliath GP900 (1955–1957) — two-cylinder, inline two-stroke, water-cooled, transverse engine, Bosch direct fuel injection.

Goliath 1100 (1957–1958) — four-cylinder opposed four-stroke water-cooled engine

1956 Lloyd LP 250 (03)
picture sizes
The Lloyd LP 250 is a small car introduced in June 1956 and offered for sale till 1957 by Lloyd Motoren Werke G.m.b.H. of Bremen. The body and running gear came from the existing Lloyd LP 400. The LP 250 differed in having the size of its two cylinder two stroke engine reduced to 250 cc. This produced a claimed maximum power of just 8 kW (11 PS) at 5000 rpm, less, even, than the 9.8 kW (13 PS) of the LP 400.

The Lloyd LP 250 became known in Germany as the “Driving Test Nerves Car” („Prüfungsangst-Auto“ ) because, under the licence classifications then in force, vehicles having an engine capacity below 250 cc fell into a more accessible drivers’ licence category (Licence Category 4) than larger engined cars.[1] Presumably at the time when the drivers’ licence categories were devised it had not occurred to the legislators that such a category might include a four seater passenger car. In later years elderly motorists who had never acquired a more conventional drivers’ licence were happy to spell out that "vehicles" in this case included cars as evidence that they were indeed licensed to drive cars and did not need to take the additional test normally necessary for driving passenger cars (Licence Category 3).

On its introduction in summer 1956 the car lacked some of the relatively luxurious features included on the LP 400 sister model. It came without hubcaps, bumpers or a backrest for passengers in the back seat. The car was offered for sale at just DM 2,980, though the missing features were available at extra cost as options. A more fully equipped version, the LP 250 V, replaced the basic LP 250 in April 1957, the formerly optional fittings becoming standard features: the price was increased to DM 3,350, however, which was the same as the price quoted for the more powerful LP 400.

In total, 3,768 Lloyd LP 250 / LP 250Vs were produced.

(Wikipedia)

- - -

3768 LP 250 bzw. LP 250 V wurden gebaut.

I used one picture for all the effects just for consistency for comparison. The title for each photo consists of the category of the effect and the name of the effect. Some effects would be better used on a different image. There are some effects also that appear to do the same thing in different effect categories.

Ezimba also has a Facebook app, Google Android app, and a free iPhone app. Please note that the free iPhone app puts a small logo on the edited image. You can buy the paid ezimba app and not have the logo.

Although posting photos, most from some time ago, I’m virtually inactive on Flickr with some sporadic moments of energy. Any views (and comments) are most appreciated. Thank you.

On display at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond is a painting by Junius Brutus Stearns (1810-1885), American painter, one of 5 major artworks by Stearns about Washington (4 are in the museum’s collection). This one is entitled Washington as a Farmer at Mount Vernon (1851), oil on canvas, measuring 14.5 x 22.625 in (36.83 x 57.47 cm). The scene shows Washington in conversation with his overseer, Mount Vernon in the background; slaves are working the field and in the lower left are two adopted grandchildren at play. One of Stearns; paintings was on a 1937 US postage stamp, depicting Washington in his role as statesman. 5 paintings are on line at www.the-athenaeum.org/art/list.php?m=a&s=du&aid=1037

Banned Books Week Banner
photo books
During Banned Books Week, we show our support of the intellectual freedom and the freedom to read. One of the reccuring images we have used each year is this banner we created with 99 of the 100 most banned books for the years 1990-2000. There are a surprising number of literary classics, children's books and books we've all grown up reading at home, in the library and at school. Authors like Roald Dahl, Stephen King, Judy Blume and Chris Crutcher even have several titles on this list!

Can you figure out which book is missing? (lulu852 was the first to guess the answer HERE.)

What is your favorite Banned Book?
How many have you read?
Pretty soon the list for years 2000-2010 will be released, what are your guesses about the books we'll see on that list? One thing we're fairly certain of, Harry Potter (series) will feature pretty high on the list!

Check out this incredible short film David Jewell made teasing the full-length documentary online!

Your library will always support your choice to read, and your choice to not read any of these books. We feel the best way to support your freedom to read is to make sure no one else makes that choice for you. Stop by your local library and enjoy your freedoms, and all that the library has to offer!

Well i finally got ambitious and published a photo book from Blurb Books. It was quite a learning experience putting it together. I choose a large landscape book with premium paper.
This style offered only 160 pages, so out of over 430 photos in my Central and Eastern Or. set, it was tough picking out my best and most interesting pictures.
I'm not going into any effort to promote this book. I just wanted one for myself and a maybe gifts for friends.
I think the only people that would be interested in buying it, would probably live in the eastern part of our state.
My next project will be the back-roads in NW Oregon.
