Okinawa Soba posted several CC licensed stereo images of life in late 19th & early 20th century Japan (the Meiji period). His photostream and website devoted to T. Enami are a wealth of images augmented by important historical context and analysis. You'd be hard pressed to find these details any where else.

The original image used for this gif, presented for parallel viewing and showing warping the loom to weave silk, dates to the end of the 19th century. l make animated ("wiggly") gifs to see the 3D effect without straining my eyes, and learn what makes a good stereo composition.

The purpose here is not to duplicate the original image, from the Library of Congress website, but to generate a downloadable animated gif to assist viewing and presentation.

The library of congress offers a multitude of historical images online, many needing no license to redistribute. The original image is titled El Capitan, from the foot of the valley, Yosemite Valley, Mariposa county, Cal. The Carleton Watkins stereograph dates to the civil war, circa 1860-5, and has no known restrictions on publication. Library of Congress reproduction number: LC-DIG-stereo-1s01350
