102 The Olmsted Vision Doubling Public Beaches

102 The Olmsted Vision Doubling Public Beaches

The Los Angeles Times recently editorialized: "Los Angeles is chronically short of park space, a civic failure that generations of leaders have only glancingly addressed. In 1930, the brilliant but ignored Olmsted-Bartholomew plan envisioned a county where every resident enjoyed easy access to beaches, vistas, recreation areas and parks. Today, just 30% or so of Los Angeles' children live within walking distance of a public place to play, the lowest percentage of any major American city -- and the city is growing denser all the time."

The City Project's maps show the Olmsted proposal for parks, playgrounds, and beaches for the Los Angeles region, compared to the poverty of parks and beaches today.

In 1930, Olmsted Brothers and Bartholomew Associates published the classic report called "Parks, Playgrounds and Beaches for the Los Angeles Region." The Report proposed a comprehensive and coherent network of parks, playgrounds, schools, beaches, forests, and transportation to promote the social, economic, and environmental vitality of Los Angeles and the health of its people. The Olmsted firm was started by the sons of the great landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, who designed Central Park in New York City and founded the field of landscape architecture. According to the Olmsted-Bartholomew Report in words that remain true today:

"Continued prosperity [in Los Angeles] will depend on providing needed parks, because, with the growth of a great metropolis here, the absence of parks will make living conditions less and less attractive, less and less wholesome. . . . In so far, therefore, as the people fail to show the understanding, courage, and organizing ability necessary at this crisis, the growth of the Region will tend to strangle itself."

The report proposed:
*the shared use of parks and schools,
*greening the Los Angeles and San Gabriel Rivers,
*doubling beach access
*using parks and school fileds for clean water and flood control
*including forests in the park system
*transportation to parks, schools, rivers, beaches, mountains, and forests.

The Report recognized that low income communities should receive first consideration in parks and recreation because they often live in less desirable areas, and have fewer leisure opportunities. The Report recognized that a balanced park and recreation system serves diverse needs, including active and passive recreation. The Report recommended creating a regional park authority with power to raise funds to acquire and develop parks and other natural public places.

Each of these recommendations remains valid today.

Implementing the Olmsted vision would have made Los Angeles one of the most beautiful and livable regions in the world. Civic leaders killed the Report because of politics, bureaucracy, and greed in a triumph of private power over public space and social democracy.

Advocates and activists today are restoring a part of the vision and the lost beauty of Los Angeles through the urban park movement.

The bride while the groom says his vows, August 11, 2007

Olympus E-500, Zuiko Digital 50-200mm f/2.8-3.5 lens. Shot at 200mm, f/4, 1/200 sec., ISO 200 and processed from RAW using Adobe Lightroom.

Sharing Exposures August theme: backlighting.

Okay, Sharing Exposures types (and others), here's the story. I did my first wedding shoot this past weekend, helping out a friend who got the gig at the last minute. I found the shoot to be very difficult because (a) I'm a complete amateur who's never shot a wedding before, except with those little disposable Kodaks folks like to put on the banquet tables, and (b) the wedding took place outdoors, in the early evening, under some of the most variable and difficult lighting conditions imaginable.

This shot of the bride, for instance, was taken during the vows. Behind her was the setting sun reflecting off a lake; I was shooting from a shady area under a tree. Bad combination. My strategy was to use spot metering and focus on the darker subject, risking blowing out the background in order to get some detail on her face; I used ISO 200 to compensate a little for the potentially slow shutter speed (although that wasn't an issue here). Then, in post-processing, I tried to make a virtue of the backlight by cropping the photo to eliminate the blown-out background and emphasize the play of light on the bride's veil; I used a little fill light on her face but kept some of the shadows for a more naturalistic, dramatic effect. I boosted the color saturation and vibrance a tiny, tiny bit, compensating for the oranging effect on her skin by reducing the saturation of the orange channel.

I personally think it came out okay, but I'm game for suggestions about how to process it better (or how to shoot it better next time -- I'm supposed to photograph my brother-in-law's wedding in the spring).

Bloom (in honor of April, national poetry month)

Sweet with the sugared nectar,
Riotous in rose, pink, and orange,
Burst forth in summer's
Wayward seeds,
The fragrant scents of
Fruitfulness,
And the honeyed, rich
Desire
Of bees.

Tennessee v. John T. Scopes Trial: Unidentified man in front of auto dealership, Dayton, Tennessee.

Description: Taken the month before the Tennessee v. John T. Scopes Trial. June 1925

Creator/Photographer: Watson Davis

Medium: Black and white photographic print

Dimensions: 4.25 in x 3 in

Culture: American

Geography: USA

Date: 1925

Repository: Smithsonian Institution Archives

Collection: Tennessee v. John Thomas Scopes Trial Photographs - During 1925, Watson Davis (1896-1967), Science Service managing editor, took numerous photographs while covering the State of Tennessee v. John Thomas Scopes trial as a reporter. In what was dubbed "The Trial of the Century," Scopes was tried and convicted for violating a state law prohibiting the teaching of the theory of evolution. William Jennings Bryan served on the prosecution team, and Clarence Darrow defended Scopes. Almost eighty years later, the nitrate negatives, including portraits of trial participants, and images from the trial itself and significant places in Dayton, were discovered in archival material donated to the Smithsonian by Science Service in 1971. Marcel C. LaFollette, an independent scholar, historian and Smithsonian volunteer uncovered these rare, previously unpublished photographs of the 1925 Tennessee vs. John Scopes "Monkey Trial" in the Smithsonian Institution Archives (SIA). In 2005, SIA restored fifty-two of the negatives with funds granted by the Smithsonian Women's Committee. Included here are thirty-nine of the images. All images belong to the Record Unit 7091: Science Service, Records, 1902-1965 collection of SIA. All photographs were taken by Watson Davis, Managing Editor of Science Service, while he was in Dayton, Tennessee, June 4-5, 1925, and July 10-22, 1925. LaFollette identified and dated each of these images, and has published a new book highlighting these and other images from the trial entitled, Reframing Scopes: Journalists, Scientists, and Lost Photographs from the Trial of the Century, University Press of Kansas, 2008.

reverse-engenieered from this photo.

Folded from a hexagon of elephant hide.
I was searching for a while, but only recentely succeeded finding in my country a place to order this stuff greater than A4.

Very good material, holds creases, can be manipulated endlessly without tearing, etc.
A pity it is so thick (110 g/m2) ; precreasing needs to apply some physical strength, it was the first time my arms were tired at the end of folding !

So I'm not going to fold everything with elephant hide. But for such 3D piece it's the best choice, I tried last year to make it from normal paper, result was not showable.

Bryce Canyon. Vertical Image

Bryce Canyon is a small national park in southwestern Utah. Named after the Mormon Pioneer Ebenezer Bryce, Bryce Canyon became a national park in 1924.

Bryce is famous for its worldly unique geology, consisting of a series of horseshoe-shaped amphitheaters carved from the eastern edge of the Paunsaugunt Plateau in southern Utah. The erosional force of frost-wedging and the dissolving power of rainwater have shaped the colorful limestone rock of the Claron Formation into bizarre shapes including slot canyons, windows, fins, and spires called "hoodoos." Tinted with colors too numerous and subtle to name, these whimsically arranged rocks create a wondrous landscape of mazes, offering some of the most exciting and memorable walks and hikes imaginable. Hidden Shapes (from an Eagle) in "The Hunting of the Snark"
image search
[top]: Redrawn segment of the print orartie van de Professor L. Wolsogen over syndroom en de nytlegging van de felue gadaen ... by an anonymous artist (1674). The print now is located at British Museum, BM Satires 1047, reg.no. 1868,0808.3286.

[bottom]: Segment of an illustration by Henry Holiday to the chapter The Hunting in Lewis Carroll's The Hunting of the Snark (1876)

Here the pattern matches are not as obvious, as in case of the 2010 comparison (shown in the comment), where the source for the reproduction of Holiday's illustration is a low resolution scan from eBooks@Adelaide. Higher resolution does not always help: Low resolution also is a kind of low pass filtering which you apply to images in order to focus on larger patterns. Therefore I inserted a vectorized low resolition segment (without manual manipulations) of Holiday's illustration into the high resolution scan of an illustration from the 1876 edition of The Hunting of the Snark. (eBooks@Adelaide told me that their scans are from the 1876 edition of the Snark as well. In the 1981 William Kaufman edition of the annotaded Snark you will find slightly different prints. There also are reproductons of Holiday's drawings.)

Why might Henry Holiday have hidden that eagle in one of his illustrations to Lewis Carroll's The Hunting of the Snark? I think that - as in case of most (not all) hidden elements in the other illustrations to the Snark - this is a pictorial allusion to another work or art. This is not about eagles. This example shows that Henry Holiday did not use shapes quoted from other illustrations and paintings in order to enhance the artistic value of his illustration by "stealing" from other artists. Rather, he may have used such copied shapes as "pointers" from his own illustrations to these other works of art. Or he simply used the shapes to construct conundrums. That would be taking references to other works of art, not plagiarism.
