Yes, this does say 'Golters Gift Set' - 'Golters', not 'Golfers'. Arguably there's a missing apostrophe too. To see my original post, visit engineroomblog.blogspot.com/2008/07/photo-special-golters...

the wedding gift

As I sat on the stairs of the Parroquia of San Miguel Arcangel snapping photos left and right a wedding was taking place right behind me. This car, I assume was a wedding gift. As I sat here taking a photo of it suddenly I realized I was in the middle of the wedding! The bride and groom were making their way down the stairs where I nonchalantly sat photographing their wedding. oops!

The 2013 Senior Class Gift Committee announced that the class has chosen to create a "We Are" sculpture on the University Park campus as it's gift to Penn State. The sculpture will include large, three-dimensional lettering that spells the iconic "We Are" and each letter will have the words of the Penn State Alma Mater inscribed in the original handwriting of Fred Lewis Pattee. Imagination: Cardboard toilet paper tubes, scraps of ribbons, tissue, and odd pieces of left over gift wrap, or newspaper comics create wonderful one of a kind handmade hanging ornaments that also contain holiday gifts like jewelry or gift cards.

Note, the red clothespin is merely holding the unfilled gift "box" up . I have yet to put the gift inside.

Imagination: Cardboard toilet paper tubes, scraps of ribbons, tissue, and odd pieces of left over gift wrap, or newspaper comics create wonderful one of a kind handmade hanging ornaments that also contain holiday gifts like jewelry or gift cards.

what makes these so wonderful is NO cost, fast to make, easy to make a lot of varieties (I get bored easily), alilbity to use whatever is lying around the house, AND best of all, the package can be reclosed and used as an ornament or gift package forever! Now that is creative reUSE and reCYCLING...yes?

I did not have glitter pens at home, or my glittery pipe cleaners, but when I go to my studio...I will dig those out. I have only just begun.

Competition, with Mary Janes

Out of the 40 or so photos from our neighborhood's annual breakfast in the park, this is my favorite. One of the men played with several children in a sort of soccer game, while the rest of us gabbed and munched. This image was shot with the zoom, waaaay across the park from where cobalt here was, yes, gabbing and munching. This is my current desktop image and one of my fave candids ever.

For those interested "Mary Janes" are a special type of girls' shoe, with a wikipedia article here. It just seemed to add to the special moment for me. If you are visiting from getting my "moo mini-card" at the breakfast, it is taking a while to sort through all the photos, but there will be a set of them soon.

Creating and exploring this fractal world, with an amazing software Mandelbulber . An experimental application designed to help you render 3D Mandelbrot fractals and fly / zoom, through them like if you were in a new dimension, exploring an Alien spaceship or travelling to the nano world .

Mind blowing experience, fun to do and beautiful at the same time. (spent most of last night playing with it. So absorbing and full of options, that I realised what time it was...when the sun came up... O=)

Here are two Mind Blowing HD videos. Made by xlace they will give you an idea of how cool this tool is. But more than that, how beautiful mathematics can be.
Relax, turn on the sound, put it on full screen and enjoy the Fractal Ride (Eppie I am sure you are going to love the "mathemaspiritual experience" =)

Talking about fractals, Legendary French mathematician Benoit Mandelbrot, father of Fractals, died last week. He was at TED this year and gave this great talk on Fractals and the art of roughness.

Here is the link to Download Mandelbulber on sourceforge-net. Have fun !! =)

And here is a web page full of beautiful and interesting Hypercomplex Fractals + few more amazing visualisations here or under this photo.

Captain Vernon Robinson, Jr., executive officer of the 124th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment, Georgia Army National Guard, discusses message discipline and other aspects of strategic communications they can employ in response to a simulated media event as part of Shared Horizons 11.

A special area of interest for the exercise was strategic communications, which involves coordinated response to events through the media, internal communications, and even the tasks assigned to units in an emergency.

A former Soviet Republic, Georgia has a culture of response that is more controlled and limited than its Western counterparts’. On hand to help introduce and teach concepts of strategic communications to the Georgians were officers of the 124th MPAD..

Travelling Home
photo to canvas
As one can see from my photos here, I love images of cars. I also love to experiment with their color and form in typical situations that we all find ourselves in, looking at it with a kind of inner eye beyond the frustration that many people have when the have to commute day after day.

If you look through the motor press then most of what you puts you, the viewer in some kind of idealized situation, but most of what we see of cars is on the road. OK, random shots of cars on the rad are probably not going to do much for anyone, but with some thought and care I believe there is much we can do to capture those feelings we experience as we travel.

Light and composition are of prime importance to me, something that is not always easy to achieve in dynamic situations, such as when we are in traffic. However, with some care and patience, the desired types of shots allow themselves to be captured.

Duomo on Canvas

For Round 22 of the Flickr Group "Get Pushed", I was challenged by the very creative Girl in Sneakers to apply textures to a photo from my recent vacation to Italy. In her words: "take a photo of an Italian or French countryside ... that tells the story of that country and use textures (like Kim Klassen's Work) to process the image."

This was an incredibly tough challenge for me, as this style of work is well outside my usual creative wheelhouse. I have a very hard time visualizing how an image will look with textures applied, so there was a lot of trial and error involved, and a lot of browsing Flickr to see what other people have done in this vein. In the end, though, I produced three images that, while very different than what I normally do, I thought were at least interesting. None are particularly subtle, but I guess that is what happens when you first start playing with a new technique.

This is probably my favorite, of the Duomo in Florence, with three textures applied: Aged Canvas Texture 7 from Skeletal Mess, Antique Aging Effect TOTD #132, also from Skeletal Mess, and Paper Bark from pareerica, all used under a Creative Commons license. Two more (one Rome, one Paris) are in the comments.

The Canvas Of The Pavilion
photo to canvas
Every year, several temporary venues are erected for the festival, which are great for sheltering from the sun or the rain in order to enjoy great performances like Hugh Lupton's Praise Song The Homing Stone.

There was a good chuckle at the start of that performance, with one of the festival staff announcing to everyone inside the tent that everyone outside the tent (who couldn't get in because all the seats had already gone) needed to move away from the doors, otherwise he couldn't let the performance start for health and safety reasons. After a couple of repeated announcements he finally twigged on and headed outside to where the people who needed to move actually were ...

... I didn't spot if he came back into the pavilion afterwards, but if he did, he would have heard Chris Wood (who was performing the Homing Stone with Hugh Lupton) mercilessly taking the piss out of him and our nanny state culture throughout the show, much to the repeated approval of the audience.

Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab ), located in Batavia near Chicago, Illinois, is a U.S. Department of Energy national laboratory specializing in high-energy particle physics. As of January 1, 2007, Fermilab is operated by Fermi Research Alliance, LLC, a joint venture of the University of Chicago and the Universities Research Association (URA). URA is a consortium of 91 leading research oriented universities primarily in the United States, with members also in Canada, Japan, and Italy. Fermilab is a part of the Illinois Technology and Research Corridor.

Fermilab's Tevatron is a landmark particle accelerator; at 6.28 kilometers (4 miles) in circumference, it is the world's second highest energy particle accelerator (LHC is 27 kilometres in circumference). In 1995, both the CDF and D0 (detectors which utilize the Tevatron) experiments announced the discovery of the top quark. In addition to high energy collider physics, Fermilab is also host to a number of smaller fixed target experiments and neutrino experiments, such as MiniBooNE (Mini Booster Neutrino Experiment), SciBooNE (SciBar Booster Neutrino Experiment) and MINOS (Main Injector Neutrino Oscillation Search). The MiniBooNE detector is a 40-foot (12-meter) diameter sphere which contains 800 tons of mineral oil lined with 1520 individual phototube detectors. An estimated 1 million neutrino events are recorded each year. SciBooNE is the newest neutrino experiment at Fermilab; it sits in the same neutrino beam as MiniBooNE but has fine-grained tracking capabilities. The MINOS experiment uses Fermilab's NuMI (Neutrinos at the Main Injector) beam, which is an intense beam of neutrinos that travels 735km through the Earth to the Soudan Mine in Minnesota.

In the public realm, Fermilab is host to many cultural events, not only public science lectures and symposia, but classical and contemporary music concerts, folk dancing and arts galleries, when the Homeland Security Advisory System permits. Currently the site is open to all visitors from dawn to dusk who present valid photo identification.

Mosquito wings vibrate 500 times each second. That's where the sound comes from. Aerodynamically this is a true masterpiece. Of course the DOP under a microscope is very very low. That's why you have to make many pictures with different DOP variations and stack them with "CombineZP". The camera is a USB microscope ocular for scientific research that was a special offer because it only works with 32bit Windows systems. Search on ebay for "MVV3000". Regular price is around 350-550 €. I payed 99 €.

Today I used a little different post-processing on my photo. As I haven't used Topaz adjust in a long time and was looking how to add more detail to this photo, I tried it out. And the spicify preset with some tweeking created quite intersting results. For those interested, this was taken in the St. Sebaldus Church in Nuremberg.

Bye ...
cat image
I brought this cat for Carol and Joe ... got it in Singapore in January. Here it was waving me goodbye ...

The Maneki Neko - literally "Beckoning Cat" - also known as Welcoming Cat, Lucky Cat, Money cat, or Fortune Cat - sometimes incorrectly labelled Chinese Lucky Cat - is a common Japanese sculpture, often made of ceramic, which is believed to bring good luck to the owner. The sculpture depicts a cat (traditionally a Japanese Bobtail) beckoning with an upright paw, and is usually displayed - many times at the entrance - in shops, restaurants, pachinko parlors, and other businesses. Some of the sculptures are electric or battery-powered and have a slow-moving paw beckoning. In the design of the sculptures, a raised left paw supposedly attracts money, while a raised right paw protects it.

Maneki Neko come in different colors, styles, and degrees of ornateness. In addition to sculptures, Maneki Neko can be found as keychains, piggy banks, air fresheners, and miscellaneous ornaments.

To Westerners it may seem as if the Maneki Neko is waving rather than beckoning. This is due to the difference in gestures and body language recognized by Westerners and the Japanese, with Japanese beckoning by holding up the hand, palm out, and repeatedly folding the fingers down and back up, thus the cat's appearance. Some Maneki Neko made specifically for Western markets will have the cat's paw facing backwards, in a beckoning gesture more familiar to Westerners.

Maneki Neko can be found with either the right or left paw raised (and sometimes both). The significance of the right and left raised paw differs with time and place. The most common belief is that the left paw raised brings in customers, while a right paw brings good luck and wealth, although some believe the opposite. Still others say that a left paw raised is best for drinking establishments, the right paw for other stores. (Those who hold their liquor well are called hidari-kiki in Japan, "left-handed".)

It is commonly believed the higher the raised paw, the greater the luck. Consequently, over the years Maneki Neko's paw has tended to appear ever higher. Some use the paw height as a crude method of gauging the relative age of a figure. Another common belief is that the higher the paw, the greater the distance good fortune will come from.

Some Maneki Neko feature battery- or solar-powered moving arms endlessly engaged in the beckoning gesture.

Maneki Neko usually have some sort of decoration around their neck. This can be a neckerchief or a scarf but the most common attire is a collar, bell and decorative bib. These items are most likely in imitation of what was common attire for cats in wealthy households during the Edo period. Red collars made from a red flower, the hichirimen, were popular and small bells were attached for decoration and to keep track of the cat's whereabouts.

The bib might also be related to the bibs often decorating statues of the divinity Jizō Bosatsu. Protective statues of Jizō can be found guarding the entrances to Japanese shrines and graveyards. Jizō is the protector of sick and dying children and grateful parents of children recovered from illness will place a bib around Jizō as a gift of thankfulness.

Maneki Neko are sometimes depicted holding a coin; usually a gold coin called a koban (小判?), used during the Edo period in Japan. A koban was worth one ryō, another early Japanese monetary unit, though the koban most Maneki Neko hold is indicated to be worth ten million ryō (千万両), and extraordinary sum of money. A ryō can be imagined as worth a thousand dollars, although the value of the coin, like the value of the dollar, varied considerably. In Japanese, the idiom "koban to cats" is the traditional equivalent of pearls before swine.

The coin obviously ties into the cat's part in bringing good fortune and wealth. It is not surprising then that one can often find Maneki Neko used as banks, a practice which goes back at least to the 1890s, much like the Western piggy bank.

Sometimes, pennies and other small coin denominations are left on the Maneki Neko as offerings. This is a practice somewhat related to that of leaving coins in a fountain or wishing well.

Maneki Neko are typically made of ceramic. However, cheaper Maneki Neko can be made of other materials ranging from plastic to wood to papier-mâché to clay, while expensive Maneki Neko may be made of jade or gold. The moving Maneki Neko are usually made of plastic.

While it is believed that Maneki Neko first appeared during the later part of the Edo period (1603–1867) in Japan the earliest documentary evidence comes from the 1870s, during Japan's Meiji Era. It is mentioned in a newspaper article in 1876 and there is evidence kimono-clad Maneki Neko were distributed at a shrine in Osaka during this time. An ad from 1902 advertising Maneki Neko indicates that by the turn of the century they were popular.

Beyond that, the exact origins of Maneki Neko are uncertain.

A frequent attribution to several Japanese emperors, as well as to Oda Nobunaga and samurai Ii Naotaka, is that one day the luminary passed by a cat, which seemed to wave to him. Taking the cat's motion as a sign, the unknown nobleman paused and went to it. Diverted from his journey, he realized that he had avoided a trap that had been laid for him just ahead. Since that time, cats have been considered wise and lucky spirits. Many Japanese shrines and homes include the figurine of a cat with one paw upraised as if waving—hence the origin of Maneki Neko, often referred to as Kami Neko in reference to the cat's kami or spirit.

Others have noted the similarities between the Maneki Neko's gesture and that of a cat washing its face. There is a Japanese belief that a cat washing its face means a visitor will soon arrive. This belief may in turn be related to an even older Chinese proverb that states that if a cat washes its face, it will rain. Thus it is possible a belief arose that a figure of a cat washing its face would bring in customers.

Maneki Neko is the subject of a number of legends. Here are three of the most popular, explaining the cat's origins:

The Temple Cat: This story goes that a wealthy feudal lord was taking shelter under a tree near Gotoku-ji temple (in Western Tokyo) during a thunderstorm. The lord saw the temple priest's cat beckoning to him and followed; a moment later the tree was struck by lightning. The wealthy man became friends with the poor priest and the temple became prosperous. When the cat died, supposedly the first Maneki Neko was made in his honor.

The Courtesan: A courtesan named Usugumo, living in Yoshiwara, in eastern Tokyo, kept a cat, much beloved by her. One night, the cat began tugging at her kimono. No matter what she did, the cat persisted. The owner of the brothel saw this, and believing the cat bewitched, cut its head off. The cat's head then flew to the ceiling where it killed a snake, ready at any moment to strike. Usugumo was devastated by the death of her companion. To cheer her up, one of her customers made her a wooden likeness of her cat as a gift. This cat image then became popular as the Maneki Neko.

The Old Woman: An old woman living in Imado (eastern Tokyo) was forced to sell her cat due to extreme poverty. Soon afterwards the cat appeared to her in a dream. The cat told her to make its image in clay. She did as instructed, and soon afterward sold the statue. She then made more, and people bought them as well. They were so popular she soon became prosperous and wealthy.

HHGTTG / H2G2 - The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is one of my all time favourite science fiction films/books. Marvin is a Paranoid Android aboard the starship Heart of Gold. The film is based on a book by Douglas Adams.

I Love this toy I tried to recreate Marvins depression, frustration and boredom in the shot =]

That's what reading does to you. Unfortunately, for me, the number of unread books on my book shelf increase everyday. From my bed I can count 9 unread/unfinished books. The list keeps on growing. Have to do something about that.

About the picture: I'm hooked to levitation photography. Seriously, it's so much fun. I think I'm going to lay off of it till I hunt up something really interesting. I tried to add a little texture since it's been almost more than two years that I used them in my pictures.

Props used: iPhone flash light to light up my face. Reading/holding "Jack Kerouac's The Dharma Bums".

It's supposed to be an awesome book and I got myself a copy home delivered just today. (I'm going to read this one.)

Hey Flickr friends... don't hate me... I'll still post here too, BUT, I decided to start using SmugMug a lot more - see why at www.stuckincustoms.com/online-portfolio/

Daily Photo - The Glorious Church at Stanford

During our amazingly fun Stanford photowalk, our entire unit crashed into into the church like the Allies setting up barracks inside a French cathedral.

Right before we went in, as I climbed the stairs, one of the more nervous-types that was on the photowalk said, "Uhhh, I don't know if they will let us in because they are about to close." I said something to the effect of, "Who cares, we're going in anyway until they come tell us to leave!" And with that, we blew in through the front doors and spread out far and wide. I set up my camera and gave a little talk about my settings for the shot. I mentioned that in dark situations, you don't want your multiple exposures to all be 30 seconds. You need to widen your aperture and increase the ISO so that your all your exposures get finished, with the final one at 30 seconds. In this situation, I shot 5 exposures at 1 step increments with my 5 respective shutter speeds at 2 seconds, 4 s, 8s, 15s, and 30s.

Play: I took this photo using my laptop's Photo Booth software and the mirror effect. I was just messing around with the different effects before taking the self photo, found this particuliar effect interesting, and decided to use it for the assignment.

I would not normally upload this photo online for sharing, but I did in this case. Normally this would just sit on my laptop for me to look at when I'm bored.

Welcome to the darkest time in my entire life. That time I packed up my car, resigned from work with the State of TX, grabbed my cat, and Drove until I ran into lots of water out west. About 2,300 miles and 3 days later, I found myself in Monterey CA, accompanied by a saint of a cat to still love me at that point, and oh, yes, nowhere to live.

Let the fun begin! (January - August 2010)

Where do good ideas come from? We discovered how to generate ideas through games with toy designer Barry Kudrowitz. In a series of team games based on improvisational comedy training, Lab participants activated the parts of their brains associated with innovation and build specific skills related to prolific idea generation. These games encourage group collaboration, rapid association, and problem solving.
