Travelling Home

As one can see from my photos here, I love images of cars. I also love to experiment with their color and form in typical situations that we all find ourselves in, looking at it with a kind of inner eye beyond the frustration that many people have when the have to commute day after day.

If you look through the motor press then most of what you puts you, the viewer in some kind of idealized situation, but most of what we see of cars is on the road. OK, random shots of cars on the rad are probably not going to do much for anyone, but with some thought and care I believe there is much we can do to capture those feelings we experience as we travel.

Light and composition are of prime importance to me, something that is not always easy to achieve in dynamic situations, such as when we are in traffic. However, with some care and patience, the desired types of shots allow themselves to be captured.

Duomo on Canvas

For Round 22 of the Flickr Group "Get Pushed", I was challenged by the very creative Girl in Sneakers to apply textures to a photo from my recent vacation to Italy. In her words: "take a photo of an Italian or French countryside ... that tells the story of that country and use textures (like Kim Klassen's Work) to process the image."

This was an incredibly tough challenge for me, as this style of work is well outside my usual creative wheelhouse. I have a very hard time visualizing how an image will look with textures applied, so there was a lot of trial and error involved, and a lot of browsing Flickr to see what other people have done in this vein. In the end, though, I produced three images that, while very different than what I normally do, I thought were at least interesting. None are particularly subtle, but I guess that is what happens when you first start playing with a new technique.

This is probably my favorite, of the Duomo in Florence, with three textures applied: Aged Canvas Texture 7 from Skeletal Mess, Antique Aging Effect TOTD #132, also from Skeletal Mess, and Paper Bark from pareerica, all used under a Creative Commons license. Two more (one Rome, one Paris) are in the comments.

The Canvas Of The Pavilion

Every year, several temporary venues are erected for the festival, which are great for sheltering from the sun or the rain in order to enjoy great performances like Hugh Lupton's Praise Song The Homing Stone.

There was a good chuckle at the start of that performance, with one of the festival staff announcing to everyone inside the tent that everyone outside the tent (who couldn't get in because all the seats had already gone) needed to move away from the doors, otherwise he couldn't let the performance start for health and safety reasons. After a couple of repeated announcements he finally twigged on and headed outside to where the people who needed to move actually were ...

... I didn't spot if he came back into the pavilion afterwards, but if he did, he would have heard Chris Wood (who was performing the Homing Stone with Hugh Lupton) mercilessly taking the piss out of him and our nanny state culture throughout the show, much to the repeated approval of the audience.
