The last image from the two families of sparrows that spent the spring nesting in the gutters of my house. Hopefully they will be returning soon when food becomes short in the local fields!

I am upgrading my broadband connectivity today - I am waiting for a brand new state of the art wireless and bluetooth modem that enables me to make phone calls from my landline and mobile phone over the net, upload images from my mobile and even check Flickr from my laptop in bed!
If all goes well I should be back up and running this evening.

Revisiting the Past at the Tumacacori Mission in Southeast Arizona
photo services
For the first time in a long time I spent the weekend in front of my computer instead of shooting out in the field. I was doing preventive maintenance by going through my photos and backing them up on various hard drives. In the process of doing so I went through my old photos from past trips that brought back memories.

In 2004 I took road trip through Southeast Arizona that gave me a flavor of a mix of the Old West, Old Mexico, amazing architecture, church history, and a reminder of the Cold War.

I shot this photo of the Tumacacori Mission with my first digital camera the Canon PowerShot S100 that had a whooping 2 megapixels, a far cry from my current Canon 5D MKII camera that shoots 21 megapixels!

I loved shooting with the PowerShot S100 and it served me well on many photo adventures. It was with me when I ran for my life when I did the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona, Spain (talk about a slow shutter lag)!

In the end, my photographic endeavors and creativity led me to outgrow that little camera and eventually lead me to getting my first digital SLR, a Canon Digital Rebel.

So many memories and so many hard drives to back them up on!

So what was your first digital camera? I would love hear from you in the comment section.

Happy Travels!

Jeff - City of Durham Engine #2

Explored: Sep. 26th 2008 #3

I shot this because I am starting on a series of photographs of people who serve us everyday and risk their lives for our safety and security. Without these people, this country, and most others, would be in total chaos. Jeff is one of so many people who leave home everyday without his wife and daughter to help serve others.

Over sometime, I have heard people discuss such great people and they wonder why they do what they do. Leaving a family behind and risk their lives. The comment that really got me started on this project was when a lady said, "Why would someone be so selfish to leave his family at home while he goes out to serve other families and people? Shouldn't people like that stay home and serve their own?"

How do I get this onto my iPhone?
There are a number of ways to do this, however I think the easiest and fastest way is to download Flickr’s free app. Within the Flickr app you surf over to my photo feed to view the images (if you make me a contact then I’ll appear in the flickr contact list). When you find one you like, just click the download button and save the image directly to your phone. Quick & Simple!

I don’t have an iPhone. Can I still use it on my phone?
As of this writing this image (960 x 640) should be large enough to be used as wallpaper with the Droid / Android, BlackBerry, Windows 7, and iPhone.

How did you make it?
This background was made using graphic design software such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Filter Forge, Genetica, Wacom, Alien Skin, Topaz Labs, as well as several other programs.

This is a Polar Panorama image of inside of the playground at "Dragon Park" in Nashville,TN . It is a combination of 8 images stitched together. This was my first attempt at my new Peleng 8mm. It takes less images now, but I am not satisfied yet. My previous images were much sharper. Hopefully it is a manual focus issue and I will just get better at it.

A few nice image share images I found:

(animated stereo) Maiko meeting in Meiji-era japan
image share
The purpose here is not to duplicate the original image, from Okinawa Soba's stream, but to generate an animated gif to assist viewing. Unfortunately, animation is not automatic - to animate you must view the image at original resolution (click all sizes) or simply scroll down.

Okinawa Soba posted several CC licensed stereoimages by T. Enami documenting life in early 20th century Japan (the Meiji period). The original hand tinted image (circa 1898), presented for parallel viewing and showing two Maiko meeting at the gate is one of many stunning stereo compositions. Note how well the tinting is done - there is very little variation in hue from image to image. This animated gif version exploits motion parallax to give a stereo illusion without eyestrain, to see what the photographer envisioned.

Animated gif generated with StereoPhotoMaker, a freeware program by Masuji Suto & David Sykes

1954 - 1962 Borgward Isabella (08)
picture sizes
The Borgward Isabella is a medium sized two door saloon that was manufactured by the Bremen based auto-manufacturer Carl F. W. Borgward GmbH between 1954 and 1962. Initially the car was badged, like its predecessor, as the Hansa 1500, but within the company it was known from the beginning by the code name, Isabella (not after Carl Borgward's wife whose name was Elisabeth), and cars produced after 1957 bore the ‘Isabella’ name, inscribed eye catchingly within the rhombus at the centre of the front grill: in retrospect the car produced from 1954 is known as the Isabella to differentiate it from the (first) Hansa 1500/1800 which the company produced between 1949 and 1954.
Despite its aspirational positioning in the marketplace, the Isabella had a smaller engine (and was marginally shorter) than its immediate predecessor. Late in 1952 the firm had launched their six cylinder Hansa 2400 model. The larger car never found many buyers; but in 1954 it made commercial sense to keep the two models from competing too directly with one another.
