Sweet, Sweet Galaxy by Pip & Pop

Smiths Row, The Market Cross, Cornhill, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk IP33 1BT
Tel: +44 (0) 1284 762081

We are happy to welcome Australian artists Tanya Schultz, Nicole Andrijevic and John Kassab to Smiths Row in what is their first major British show. Schultz and Andrijevic have worked in collaboration since 2007 using the alias Pip & Pop and this is their second collaboration with sound artist Kassab.

Sweet sweet galaxy is a unique installation depicting an infinite psychedelic landscape. An amalgamation of numerous materials including coloured sugar, fine sand, cake decorations, origami, found objects, LED lights and sound, this colourful sensory kingdom will be constructed directly in the gallery space in early January.

The soundscape, created in collaboration with Melbourne-based John Kassab, adds another layer of immersion to the audience experience and sense of being transported to a faraway or imagined place. Whilst the soundscape adds to the narrative of the imagined landscape, interpreting the sounds with sugar has been central to Pip & Pop's process when working with John.

The sugar used in this exhibition has been kindly donated by Silverspoon. As the sole producers of homegrown British sugar the company supports 1200 East Anglian beet farmers. According to Dan Gough of Silverspoon: "the sugar used in this exhibition was grown an average of 30 miles away from the gallery".

So I have to admit that I was very skeptical about the refurb of this attraction with the new Disney characters going in. I really wasn't sure how they'd fit in. The last time I'd been on Disneyland's IASW was the only time I'd been on it as it was closed for refurb last August when I went. Before the refurb I was a little disappointed and thought that the WDW version was the better attraction (besides DL's impressive outdoor queue). But now - wow, they really did this attraction up and it looks amazing! The new Disney characters fit in so seamlessly that I'm certain many people that have never experienced the attraction probably don't know that they weren't always there. I was quite impressed with the improvements and with all the improved and freshened colors this attraction was a real joy to shoot. If you've been around my photostream for a while, you probably know that I like me some vivid colors, so this attraction is a perfect match for me, which - coupled with the fact that my kids like it so much - is probably the main reason I love it so much.

I worked long and hard to get rid of some nasty red color cast on this image, so I hope you like it!

The Library of Congress website offers a multitude of historical images, many with no known restrictions on use. This image is derived from two 1864 glass stereograph negatives titled Fort Brady, Va. Three officers of the 1st Connecticut Heavy Artillery. These men served in company C. An interesting historical recollection, First Connecticut Heavy Artillery, Historical Sketch and Present Addresses of Members, was written by E. B. Bennett, who served in company K..

Wow, my first Explored image. Thanks everyone!!

This is one of the first shots from last evening. So I once again had a one stop Neutral Density to get the slower shutter speed for the water motion and a 3 stop soft graduated ND for the sky. I also did some lightroom work with the white balance to bring up the sand, a little dodge and burn here and there but not too much.
.6 sec exposure, f/13, ISO 100 @ 13mm.
Anytime I add a filter with the GND setup I can only go as low as 13mm on the lens or I get some vignetting. (13mm = 20mm with the crop sensor)
Well, that's about it. Thanks for looking! Official website is Here.

Big gun (just finished firing) being covered up prior to moving
Image by National Library of Scotland
As shown in this image, some of the guns used during the conflict were so big that they could only be moved around on railway lines. The men in the photograph are unfolding the tarpaulin to cover the gun and protect it from any adverse weather conditions. It may also have been used to camouflage the gun from enemy reconnaissance.

Railway artillery was ideal for deployment during 'the Great War' because of the static nature of the fighting, and all the warring armies used such guns. At first, the railway artillery used by the British army was surplus naval artillery moved onto hydraulic railway wagons. The German army also used railway artillery on the Western Front. One of their most powerful rail guns was the famous 'Paris Gun', which shelled the capital from a distance of 130 kilometres.

[Original reads: 'OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPH TAKEN ON THE BRITISH WESTERN FRONT. A big gun (just finished firing) being covered up prior to moving.']

I got my package of goodies from the Mr.Bento Fun Swap from nadja.robot (she got in at the last minute, I had already sent everyone's info out and reorganzined once, so I said I'd simply swap straight across with her!)

Again, the package arrived with some lovely/much-needed pick-me-up timing!
Strangely I was so distraught/reeling that even the excitement of a package wasn't much... but I am so appreciative of it all, and quickly came up with ideas of how & when to put stuff to use!

Thanks, Nadja, seriously... thanks!

Papier mache frame

I made this long time ago...
The base is corrugated cardboard. Using papier mache technique, I layered small pieces of news paper on it, and finished with black/white copy of medieval manuscript. Then, colours were added little bit and finished with antique coloured coat.
The picture was taken from "Die Minnesinger", one of 1960's German book series "Insel-Bucherei"

In the latest case the infant was found in the sewage pipe in a residential building in Jinhua in the wealthy coastal province of Zhejiang on Saturday afternoon.

The harrowing discovery came after residents reported the sound of a baby crying, state television said late on Monday.

The pipe was just four inches wide in diameter the China Daily newspaper said.

Firefighters had to remove the pipe and take it to a nearby hospital, where doctors carefully cut around it to rescue the baby boy inside, the report said.

His arms had been pinned to his side, and when the confines of the pipe had been delicately prised away, he let out a long wail - much to the relief of doctors who were battling against the clock to rescue him.

His eyes, face and body were covered in the filth of the pipe.

The child is in a stable condition and the police are looking for his parents, state television added.

The Associated Press said the child had been named Baby No 59 from the number of his incubator, the Guardian reported.

A number of visitors have donated nappies, baby clothes and powdered milk to the hospital to help the little boy, the news agency added.

The case has been widely discussed on China's Twitter-like service Sina Weibo due to the graphic nature of the footage, with calls for the parents to be severely punished.

'The parents who did this have hearts even filthier than that sewage pipe,' wrote one user.

Soldiers from the 887th Engineer Battalion, out of Augusta, Ga., gather wood to practice working with handheld power tools on a 10,000 square-foot rubble pile training site, Aug. 31, in Raleigh, N.C. The soldiers are part of a search and rescue unit and were working side by side with civilian firefighters from Raleigh, Fayetteville and Cary, N.C., as a part of a Vigilant Guard training exercise. The National Guard and civilian first responders worked together to help each other, learning from the others' techniques. The site the soldiers worked on allowed them to work on most aspects of search and rescue.
