Flash Gordon: Star quarterback of the New York Jets, vanquisher of Ming the Merciless, and savior of the universe.

Flash: Barry Allen, the super-speedster who sacrified himself to save the Earth from the evil Anti-Monitor.

If they had to fight, who would win?

#149 in the Duel 365 series.

Papa Flash
flash photo
Papa Flash, aka Harold "Doc" Edgerton, was a professor at MIT and is credited with bringing the strobe flash to the masses. In the foreground is the introduction to his book "Flash! Seeing the Unseen by Ultra High-Speed Photography" and beneath it lies "Electronic Flash, Strobe".

This photo is for my most recent student blog post Finding Focus, which is directed at MBA students and applicants but with a slant towards my photographic endeavors. I was searching for the photo and ran into a hall lined with photos from Doc Edgerton, a name that is familiar to the MIT community due to the dorm bearing his name. His legacy in imaging continues at MIT's Edgerton Center.

Ironically, no flash fired while capturing this image :)

ezimba is a web site that can apply different imaging effects.
www.ezimba.com/index.html

I used one picture for all the effects just for consistency for comparison. The title for each photo consists of the category of the effect and the name of the effect. Some effects would be better used on a different image. There are some effects also that appear to do the same thing in different effect categories.

Ezimba also has a Facebook app, Google Android app, and a free iPhone app. Please note that the free iPhone app puts a small logo on the edited image. You can buy the paid ezimba app and not have the logo.

Baby Elephant meets the herd

Some cool baby picture images:

Baby Elephant meets the herd
baby picture
Taken at the Elephant Nature Park outside of Chiang Mai, Thailand, in October 2007. "Ele" was born in the jungle. Her mom was (is) a trekking elephant. When she was born she rolled down the side of a hill and was left without her mother for hours until her mother's mahoot found mom and baby. They were immediately taken to Elephant Nature Park, a safe haven for elephants in Thailand, where Ele was cared for by volunteers around the clock - feeding her, helping her walk, and swatting away flies. In this picture, Ele is being greeted by her grandmother, who happens to be a permanent resident at the park.

What bizarre little things babies are. I mean, really, what's going on in their heads?

Visiting a friend in Falmouth and his host mom asked if I'd take a few pictures of their son. So I did. Just bizarre, funny little things.

Another upload of some of the photos I've been taking over the past couple of months.

Things have settled down a little now. My father's house is on the market and we're looking at moving him to a more appropriate home for his needs. Meanwhile I'm starting to get organised for university in October. The trouble now is that I have a mountain of photos to edit and upload. Luckily I don't have much time to take any at the moment!

Thanks everyone for your continued support and lovely comments. I'm definitely on my way back!

Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York
Jules-Joseph Lefebvre
French, 1836–1912
Graziella
Oil on canvas
Signed and dated (lower right): Jules LeFebvre. 1878.

From the museum’s description:

During the second half of his life, Lefebvre's meticulously executed portraits and paintings of nudes were regularly shown in the Paris Salons. He won many awards, including the prestigious Prix de Rome, three Salon medals, and the French Legion of Honor.

The American collector Catharine Lorillard Wolfe—who bequeathed to the Museum 143 pictures, including all of those hanging on this wall—commissioned "Graziella" in 1878. It depicts the Neopolitan fisherman's daughter who is the heroine of Alphonse de Lamartine's novel of the same name. A smoking Mount Vesuvius is visible in the background.

The spring 2013 hackNY student hackathon brought in hundreds of students to Columbia University's Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science April 6-7 for 24 hours of creative collaborative hacking on New York City startups' APIs.

NYC Startups, selected by a student organizing committee, presented their technologies at the beginning of the event, after which students formed groups to work through the night implementing their own ideas for fresh hacks built on top of these APIs.

On Sunday afternoon students presented their projects to an audience including a judging panel featuring members of the NYC startup community, which selected the final winning teams.

Since April 2010, hackNY hosts student hackathons one each semester, as well as the hackNY Fellows program, a structured internship which pairs quantitative and computational students with startups which can demonstrate a strong mentoring environment: a problem for a student to work on, a person to mentor them, and a place for them to work. Startups selected to host a student compensate student Fellows. Students enjoy free housing together and a pedagogical lecture series to introduce them to the ins and outs of joining and founding a startup in NYC.

To find out what you missed at the spring 2013 hackNY student hackathon please do see our HackerLeague event page and blog post announcing the winners.

Special thanks to our spring 2013 hackNY student hackathon judges! And congratulations to the winners of the spring 2013 hackNY student hackathon!

Nice Earth Image photos

Some cool earth image images:

Shadow of the Moon, Pacific Ocean (NASA, International Space Station, 05/20/12)
earth image
Image by NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center
Photographed by the Expedition 31 crew aboard the International Space Station and easily spotted at top center in this image is the gray shadow of the moon, cast on bright clouds of the northern Pacific Ocean, as the May 20 solar eclipse point tracked towards the Aleutian Islands and then on to northern California. The eclipse is seen obliquely so it appears as a flattened circle. The eclipse was visible for about 3.5 hours, and since the ISS orbits Earth every 90 minutes there was a chance that the ISS crew would see (if not the total eclipse by looking directly overhead), some evidence at least in the form of a partial eclipse. Only since the start of human spaceflight could such an image have been shot, looking back at the moon's shadow projected against Earth. As it happened, say NASA scientists, the timing was almost as good as if it had been planned. The space station passed "behind" the eclipse on May 20, that is, the shadow of the eclipse passed the point in the Northwest Pacific Ocean only three minutes before the station crossed the same point. But the crew was still able to see the densest part of the shadow a little more than 600 kilometers to the northeast of their position when they shot this photograph. The edge of the shadow looks diffused because of the partial eclipse zone—the wide area where more or less of the sun can be seen around the edge of the moon. The zone of partial eclipse covers a far wider area than the area covered by the total eclipse. Twenty-six minutes later, as they approached Antarctica in the other hemisphere, the six-member crew saw the sun set as they passed onto the dark side of the planet.

Mount Shasta, California (NASA, International Space Station, 09/20/12)
earth image
Image by NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center
Mount Shasta, California is featured in this image photographed by an Expedition 33 crew member on the International Space Station. The Cascade Range includes many impressive stratovolcanoes along its north-south extent, some active over the past few hundred years. Mount Shasta in northern California is among the largest and most active (over the past 4,000 years) of the volcanoes in the Cascades. The summit peak of the volcanic structure is at an elevation of 4,317 meters above sea level, and is formed by the Hotlum cone -- the location of the most recently recorded (1786) volcanic activity. The summit is high enough to retain snow cover throughout the year, and several small glaciers are present along the upper slopes of Shasta. Immediately to the west of the summit peak, but still on the upper slopes of Shasta, is the Shastina lava dome complex, reaching 3,758 meters above sea level. Two dark lava flows that originated from the Shastina complex and flowed downslope (toward the northwest) are visible in the lower part of this image. These contrast sharply with the surrounding vegetated (green) lower slopes and the barren upper slopes (gray) of Shasta. The Black Butte lava dome complex forms another, isolated hill on the lowermost slopes of Shasta near the town of Weed, CA (right). Geologists have mapped prehistoric pyroclastic flow and mudflow (also known as lahars) deposits from Hotlum cone and the Shastina and Black Butte lava dome complexes to distances of 20 kilometers from the summit of Shasta. As Mount Shasta has erupted within the past 250 years and several communities are within this hazard radius, the United States Geological Survey's California Volcano Observatory actively monitors the volcano for signs of activity.

One Earth: Driveway to Street
earth image
This is one of the options I had for my ONE-only image to add to the One Earth group pool. I like this one for transitions from driveway pavement in a gentle slope to the street, the gutter area shows a bit of the bottles that were thrown from a car during the night a few days ago. My roomate woke from sleep in the middle of the night thinking he heard windows breaking. We did not know what it was, then. But today, since I looked DOWN for a change, I saw the glass shards from the sidewalk to the driveway to the asphalt on the street. This little pile is swept away now... The image I settled on for the group pool is here.

Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab), located in Batavia near Chicago, Illinois, is a U.S. Department of Energy national laboratory specializing in high-energy particle physics. As of January 1, 2007, Fermilab is operated by the Fermi Research Alliance, a joint venture of the University of Chicago and the Universities Research Association (URA). Fermilab is a part of the Illinois Technology and Research Corridor.

Fermilab's Tevatron is a landmark particle accelerator; at 3.9 miles (6.3 km) in circumference, it is the world's second largest energy particle accelerator (the CERN LHC is 27 kilometres in circumference). In 1995, both the CDF and D0 (detectors which utilize the Tevatron) experiments announced the discovery of the top quark. In addition to high energy collider physics, Fermilab is also host to a number of smaller fixed target experiments and neutrino experiments, such as MiniBooNE (Mini Booster Neutrino Experiment), SciBooNE (SciBar Booster Neutrino Experiment) and MINOS (Main Injector Neutrino Oscillation Search). The MiniBooNE detector is a 40-foot (12 m) diameter sphere which contains 800 tons of mineral oil lined with 1520 individual phototube detectors. An estimated 1 million neutrino events are recorded each year. SciBooNE is the newest neutrino experiment at Fermilab; it sits in the same neutrino beam as MiniBooNE but has fine-grained tracking capabilities. The MINOS experiment uses Fermilab's NuMI (Neutrinos at the Main Injector) beam, which is an intense beam of neutrinos that travels 455 miles (732 km) through the Earth to the Soudan Mine in Minnesota.

In the public realm, Fermilab is host to many cultural events, not only public science lectures and symposia, but classical and contemporary music concerts, folk dancing and arts galleries, when the Homeland Security Advisory System permits. Currently the site is open to all visitors from dawn to dusk who present valid photo identification.

A small herd of American bison, started at the lab's founding, lives on the grounds symbolizing Fermilab's presence on the frontier of physics and its connection to the American prairie.

Fake tilt-shift lens effect created by TiltShiftMaker (thanks to Scott for the link). Richmond, B.C., June 2002. This is a real aerial shot; it just looks like a model because of the focus effect.

E-G.A Personnel Mollification Unit

A planet-wide ban on the import of all Ephra-Goll Assemblies products has gone into effect until the security forces of the city of New Refiun regain full control their mechs. Although no one has yet been injured or killed except while attempting to incapacitate either IPUs or the USNU, there is no consensus on when, if ever, they will respond to issued orders again.

The apparently busy "SMITH, JOHN" and another so-called clerical error have resulted in a large shipment of Personnel Mollification Units being shipped in by E-G.A. Although just over a meter tall and running software that barely qualifies as AI, they've shown themselves to be remarkably crafty hiding themselves throughout the USNU's bay. They have been observed to disassemble still-online robots while giggling using sound samples of children's laughter from the planetwide archives.

Frankly, this would be absurd if it weren't so dangerous. Overwhelming force will be brought to bear on the bay soon if the mechs' AIs continue to refuse killswitch commands.

I wanted to build something a little more animalistic. I also wanted an excuse to do stumpy, bladed legs which suggested that I'd need a quadruped or at least knuckle-walking mech which led me to this ape-esque design. Unintentionally, it happens to resemble some of the colossi from the game 'Shadow of the Colossus'.
