Daily App Experiment #106: "Bi Cycle" - Cropped the photo and added a border with #camera+, then did additional editing in the Lo-Mob app. Then I used #ColorSplash to remove the color from all of the image except for the bike. The effect is particularly subtle in this image, but I like it. I then brought the image back into Camera+ and added another with border with rounded edges, which makes the previous border look cooler. #daily_appsperiment #appsperiment #lomob

Orange Crêpe Paper - Brian Eno Speaker Flowers Sound Installation at Marlborough House
image upload
View this virtual tour of 152 images as a Slideshow

Backlit orange crêpe paper over a window. A composite image combining three focal depths to preserve detail in most parts of the image.

See also the related "Brian Eno 77 Million Paintings" set, - an exhibition that ran concurrently at Fabrica Gallery during the festival.

This image is part of a set of photos of the Brian Eno Speaker Flowers Sound Installation at Marlborough House (and also of the house itself) on the Old Steine, Brighton, East sussex, UK. The exhibition was presented by Fabrica Art Gallery, as part of the Brighton Festival, May 2010. The installation includes the poems and words of Rick Holland.

The Grade I listed house was built circa 1765 , purchased at one time by the Duke of Marlborough, and substantially remodelled by the Scottish architect Robert Adam.

Some of the photos in this set are presented in multiple versions made possible using HDR (High Dynamic Range) photography - these variations are displayed with more than one exposure, gamma, "local adaptation" compression or "unsharp mask" process.

Many rooms had their windows screened using coloured Crêpe paper / tissue paper. This gave their illumination a colour cast - which has been exaggerated (or neutralised) on an image by image basis. The actual experience of the coloured light was one of only a slight and soft hue.

In some instances the photos have modified to give an architectural, classical, "two-point" perspective - with forced, parallel verticals.

see that adorable little inbox sign? well it's even more adorable; covered up by papers is a big arrow, a mail box, and a birdie saying "mail's here!" that binder really shouldn't be there, but it's come to live there. i need to move it.

so, naturally, when people have things to leave for me when i'm out, they throw it on my desk. >.< our maintenance supervisor's the only one who's got it so far (he's the one who piled those papers there). good on 'im!

Michigan Municipal League Helps Southwest Solutions Families at the Holidays With Gift Baskets, Food, Family Photos, Crafts and Dinner

A few nice photo gift images I found:

Michigan Municipal League Helps Southwest Solutions Families at the Holidays With Gift Baskets, Food, Family Photos, Crafts and Dinner
photo gift
Image by Michigan Municipal League (MML)
The Michigan Municipal League was honored to recently provide a dinner and gifts for the 15 family members receiving services from the Detroit-based Southwest Solutions non-profit organization. Dozens of League staff members participate in the recent event in Detroit. The League’s effort was coordinated by the League’s own Heather Van Poucker: www.mml.org/newsroom/about_bios.html/. Heather and League staff donated their personal time and financial resources to provide a holiday dinner and gifts to 15 Detroit families – about 70 people total. The following information about the event is from the Southwest Solutions Facebook page: www.facebook.com/southwest-solutions/#!/pages/Southwest-S.... Read more here: www.facebook.com/notes/southwest-solutions/michigan-munic.... All 15 families currently in our Family Skills program benefited from the generosity of the Michigan Municipal League, which threw a special holiday party for them. The festive event featured a full-course dinner, holiday decorations, arts and crafts activities, keepsake family photos, family-fun gift bags, and gift food packages to prepare a complete holiday meal at home. The impetus for the party came from Heather Van Poucker, Director of Information and Policy Research at the Michigan Municipal League (MML). MML works to create better and vibrant communities in Michigan. Heather attended Solutions at Sunrise in October as a guest of Sean Mann, of the Let’s Save Michigan campaign and a member of the MML staff. Heather says she was inspired by Solutions at Sunrise to do something “hands on” to help some of the families served by Southwest Solutions. “The holiday party was all done through our staff’s personal donations and time, but I really think we took away more than we left,” said Heather. “We had a wonderful experience working with the Family Skills program and are already dreaming of what we’ll do next!” The Family Skills program serves “high-risk” families in southwest Detroit. These families are often referred to the program by the Department of Human Services (DHS) or other community agencies. All the families are in crisis from significant stresses that threaten the wellbeing of the children. The Family Skills program serves to strengthen families by providing intensive home-based counseling to improve family stability and functioning. The program is based upon a national model that is proven to be effective in helping families set positive goals and develop the skills to meet those goals. The take-home food package was donated by Busch’s Fresh Food Market in Ann Arbor. It contained a frozen turkey, frozen pie, vegetables, stuffing and potatoes. The holiday party took place on December 8 at our Early Childhood & Family Literacy Building on Larkins Street. To learn more about the Family Skills program, contact Vicki Dawson at vdawson@swsol.org or 313-963-2266 ext. 3377.

Google Docs Help: Drawing: Creating Drawings:

I have tested out way more than my share of online image editors over
the years. It is usually a case of this one won't do this and that one
won't do that, and the other one will do it but only in a different
format. So to get the image I wanted, I would start in one editor,
convert file format, switch to another editor, convert format again,
and so forth until I could perform all the various functions required
to create the image I had in mind.

Being a librarian, I am forever making Venn diagrams (kind of like the
song "I'm always blowing bubbles"). That has become my standard of how
useful a graphic editor is, followed closely by creating flowcharts.
Google Drawing does both, very nicely, I might add! One of the
problems I always had with Venn diagrams in online graphic editors was
transparency, so I could see the overlap of the circles. You can see
that isn't a problem in the image I put with this post. Now, I just
wish I could have partial transparency with a pale color, but that
might be asking too much just yet. I am pretty happy just to have this
tool as an extension to the Google Docs collaboration suite. Very
nice.

"........When I return to my house I find that visitors have been there and left
their cards, either a bunch of flowers, or a wreath of evergreen, or a
name in pencil on a yellow walnut leaf or a chip. They who come rarely
to the woods take some little piece of the forest into their hands
to play with by the way, which they leave, either intentionally or
accidentally. One has peeled a willow wand, woven it into a ring, and
dropped it on my table. I could always tell if visitors had called in
my absence, either by the bended twigs or grass, or the print of their
shoes, and generally of what sex or age or quality they were by some
slight trace left, as a flower dropped, or a bunch of grass plucked and
thrown away, even as far off as the railroad, half a mile distant, or by
the lingering odor of a cigar or pipe. Nay, I was frequently notified of
the passage of a traveller along the highway sixty rods off by the scent
of his pipe........."

Henry David Thoreau (Walden)

Summer. When the day is over
There's a heart a little colder;
Someone said goodbye,
But you don't know why.
Somewhere there is someone keeping
All the tears they have been weeping,
Someone said goodbye,
But you don't know why.

Is there a reason
Why a broken heart begins to cry?
Is there a reason
You were lost although you don't know why?
Give me a reason
Why you never want to say goodbye.
If there's a reason,
I don't know why.

Always looking for a meaning,
All the time you keep believing,
But I don't know why
You won't say goodbye.
Even when the sun is shining
You don't see the silver lining,
But I don't know why
You won't say goodbye.

Is there a reason
Why a broken dream can never fly?
Is there a reason
You believe and then you close your eyes?
Give me a reason
Why you hide away so much inside.
If there's a reason,
I don't know why.

Is there a reason
Why a broken heart begins to cry?
Is there a reason
You were lost although you don't know why?
Give me a reason
Why you never want to say goodbye.
If there's a reason
I don't know why.
I don't know why.
I don't know why.
I don't know why

Picture taken at the "Maker Faire 2008" (San Mateo, CA) - a collection of creative, weird, and sometimes useless (but always interesting) inventions, exhibits and art performances. Check out the other pictures in this set.

From http://makerfaire.com/pub/e/1197:

2πr: A blisteringly interactive large-scale fire toy that translates anyone's movement into fire. A central stage lined with proximity sensors is surrounded by an outer ring of flame effects, creating huge bursts of flame when a dancer moves onstage.

Canadian Forces Search and Rescue Technicians apply first aid to simulated victims at a simulated aircraft disaster scene during Canadian Force’s EXERCISE TRILLIUM RESPONSE near Cochrane, Ontario.

Search and Rescue (SAR) in Canada is a challenging and demanding task, and Canadian Forces Search and Rescue Technicians (SAR Techs) are highly-trained specialists providing the on-scene medical attention and rescue for aviators, mariners and others in distress in remote or hard-to-reach areas.

Each year, JTFC along with partner government agencies, conducts a major field training EXERCISE in the province of Ontario to test its ability to provide military assistance to civil authorities. Named the TRILLIUM RESPONSE series of EXERCISEs, these address a range of scenarios under varying environmental conditions. EXERCISE TRILLIUM RESPONSE 2012 provides a realistic and challenging scenario for the soldiers and aircrews of JTFC, while testing JTFC’s command and control in a partnered domestic response. The EXERCISE revolves around reported aircraft crashes outside of Cochrane in the Mistango Lake area, and northwest of Hearst near Constance Lake.
