My Mum, Dorothy Scott, celebrated her 90th birthday on the 20 June at a big, happy family and friends party. She had a wonderful time. We surprised her with a big party that was attended by family and friends, some travelling from Sydney and Melbourne to help her celebrate.

Hacking the Heart Spark with a proximity sensor - testing on the sillyscope

Hacking Eric Boyd's Heart Spark pendant, which pulses LEDs my heartbeat via my Polar gym chest strap transmitter. I've been experimenting with a proximity sensor to light up the top 3 LEDs on the Heart Spark. It's been very much trial and error to get it to work with various voltage supplies, so far I've tried a 3V coin and a AAA battery with a step up voltage component. It works best as seen in this image with a 4.4V supply from a variable mains adapter.

Dad's father in 1923
family photo
Thanks to of bedbugs and bad habits for reworking this one. My father's youngest brother passed away this month. Dad and I sorted through my uncle's things - in his FEMA trailer and in the remains of his home (not much left), flooded during Hurricane Katrina. I found this photograph in the old house. I think it's the only remaining photograph of my paternal grandfather, so I was very happy to find it had survived, tucked into the top drawer of an old filing cabinet above the flood line. My dad lost his photos of him when my childhood home burned in 2001. This is "Papa's" high school senior portrait, taken in 1923. "Papa" was born Hiram Young Q. in 1903. He left school for family reasons and graduated with a later class. He later changed his name to William Hiram Q. Dad and my brother Will are his namesakes.

On the evenings of 9, 10 and 11 August 2012, there was a spectacular fireworks show in Scheveningen. It was the 33rd edition of this breathtaking annual International Fireworks Festival. The fireworks shows displayed a beautiful spectacle of silver-white skyrockets, sparkling fountains and stars of iridescent light against a dark blue Scheveningen sky. There were two shows per night, one starting at 21.45 hrs. and the second at 22.30 hrs.
---

NASA Satellites See Hurricane Barbara Come Ashore and Fizzle
image
Image by NASA Goddard Photo and Video
NASA’s TRMM satellite captured this image of Tropical Depression Barbara’s rainfall at 09:58 UTC (2:58 am PDT) on May 30. By this time, Barbara had been downgraded to a tropical depression with maximum sustained winds of 30 knots (~35 mph). Most of the rain associated with Barbara at this time appears to be light (blue areas) with a smaller proportion of moderate rain (green areas) than before and only an isolated area of heavy rain along the Gulf coast side (red dot).

NASA Satellites See Hurricane Barbara Come Ashore and Fizzle

Hurricane Barbara recently made landfall along the southern Pacific coast of Mexico and NASA’s TRMM and Suomi NPP satellites captured rainfall rates within the storm, and a night-time image of landfall. NOAA’s GOES satellites provided images that were made into an animation showing the landfall and movement across Mexico into the Bay of Campeche on May 31.

According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), the center of Hurricane Barbara came ashore around 19:50 UTC (12:50 p.m. PDT) on Wednesday, May 29 about 35 km (~20 miles) west of Tonala, Mexico. At landfall, Barbara was a minimal Category 1 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph.

For the full storm history of Hurricane Barbara, visit NASA’s Hurricane page at: www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/hurricanes/archives/2013/h2013...

Look Ma, No Borders on Photos and Sets are Now on the Right

Last week I wrote about some major redesign efforts that were scheduled to go on over at Flickr this week per the Flickr Blog and about an hour ago they hit.

Following are my observations on the new site redesign based on a quick and initial review. I'll try to update my thoughts on the redesign in more depth later.

1. Flickr is out of Beta. Gone is the familar beta bug next to the flickr name and in it's place is a Gamma bug. Somebody has a sense of humor.

2. Instead of the familiar menu at the top of a page of Photos: "Yours," "Upload," "Organize," "Your Contacts," and "Explore" you now get nice little ajaxy pull down menus that include "You" "Organize" "Contacts" "Groups" and "Explore"

3. The "Organize" section seems to have been, enhance, simplified and works smoother.

4. Overall the design and user interface feels more elegant. It is hard to describe why this is the case, it is just a feel.

5. Search has been improved. Included are now ways to filter search by Creative Commons license (helpful for both commercial and non commercial concerns looking to find images to use). Also, the default search results are now fetched back by "most relevant" (a new category) rather than by "most recent." "Most recent" photos for a search were frequently less interesting photos. You still have an option to change your search to "most recent," but "most relevant" is a much better way to showcase the best photos that flickr has to offer. I'm still not sure how "most relevant" differs from "most interesting" but will look into this. While the "most relevant" pictures are indeed an improvement over "most recent," they are still not quite as good as "most interesting" in my opinion. But it's a step in the right direction.

There are also new and additional ways to filter search for groups. You can sort your group search results by "most recent activity" "group size" and "date created."

Lacing Pillow
search by image
Detail from an Illustration by Henry Holiday (cut by Joseph Swain) to Lewis Carroll's The Hunting of the Snark, 1876.

273    The Boots and the Broker were sharpening a spade--
274        Each working the grindstone in turn:
275    But the Beaver went on making lace, and displayed
276        No interest in the concern:

277    Though the Barrister tried to appeal to its pride,
278        And vainly proceeded to cite
279    A number of cases, in which making laces
280        Had been proved an infringement of right.

Why should a peaceful activity like lace-making have "proved an infringement of right"? The Beaver's "lace-making" may have been used to symbolize dissection in context with C. L. Dodgson's (aka Lewis Carroll's) involvement in the vivisection debate.
