This piece is mounted on the facade of a building in Osaka, Japan. I took this shot by standing directly underneath it and pointing the camera straight up.

Contemplative vern.

The only editing of this photo was to change the color of the background. I like my orange walls but am a little tired of the monotonous backgrounds in my photos.

Fairly straightforward clone job.

Camera set up: Tripod, remote, and set to Av... I did that in an attempt to mitigate any variations resulting from the auto focus. Un-fortunately, I set the aperature too low as the sutter speed was slow enough that many of the shots I took had considerable motion blur. I'm thinking that perhaps I should've opened it up a little more. A better flash than the built-in would've been good too. Perhaps if I could've bounced light off the ceiling, the shadows I projected wouldn't have been an issue.

This image was from three different pictures. One of just the room, and one each (obviously) of the different poses. Each figure was then selected, along with their shadows. To do the selection:

-Do a rough select around the object using the free-select too.
-Toggle quick mask on shift-q
-using the paint brush, paint with black (will show up red) all the areas you don't want to select
-once you're done, toggle quick mask off (shift-q). This should leave you with the area you want to have selected.
-In this case, I feathered the selection (Select>Feather... choose amount in pixels)
-copy, paste, choose layer>New Layer, and the recently pasted image will be its own layer.

After both figures were placed on the blank background, I checked around the edges to see if anything that got copied wasn't lining up. There were a few cases where the pillows got jostled, so i used a combo of heal and clone tool to fix. These fixes are obvious upon close inspection. A better alternative would've been to extend the selection from the 'figure image' until it matched the background image. I couldn't do that in this case because the lighting was too different. The solution to that issue would be to figure out how to take pictures where the lighting doesn't vary so dramatically, or make them match in gimp.

Then I just merged the layers, played around with levels and curves. After that, in an attempt to gloss over some of the remaining discrepencies in lighting, I copied the layer, made it b&w (desaturate), and changed the mode to 'hard light'.

I'm doing a few of these from different poses, if you want to check my photostream.

If you have any suggestions on how this could've been done better, I'd love to hear them in comments.

Philips Wouwerman (1619-1668) Dutch artist was from Haarlem where he lived and worked most of his life. Though over 1000 paintings have been attributed to him, the true number is likely much less, many works of his brothers Jan and Pieter as well as imitators and followers being credited to Philips. His popularity continued into the 18th century. Large collections of his artwork are at the Gemäldegalerie in Dresden, Germany and the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, Russia.

His works include many landscapes, hunting scenes, battle, military camps, travelers, peasant activities, etc. The landscapes are decidedly un-Dutch with hills and other features not normally associated with the flat vistas of the Netherlands. He became well-know for his depiction of horses in action. The canvases seemed filled with interesting details and delicate, understated colors. Possibly his best works are from around 1650 to 1660, and this “Stag Hunt in a River” is probably in that time period (the museum placard states about 1650-2655). It is located at the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh.

Photographers deal in things which are continually vanishing and when they have vanished there is no contrivance on earth which can make them come back again.

I was trying to explain to my son what these empty film canisters are.

Me: "In the older days, we need to have these in our cameras before we can take pictures..."

Son: "Oh.. are they batteries?" :)

I've decided to collect a set of photos of these film canisters. For just mere keepsake or not, I love how they look, especially in a set.

I hope they may bring back fond memories for you. Which one is your favorite?

Photographers expand horizons in 2010 Army Digital Photography Contest 110311

PHOTO CAPTION: Staff Sgt. Pablo Piedra, an Army recruiter in Douglasville, Ga., won the Division I design elements category of the 2010 Army Digital Photography Contest with "9" a photo he shot after winning a footrace with his wife to the bottom of a stairwell at Heidelberg Castle in Germany. Piedra did not realize what he had until he downloaded the photo. "When I got home and I looked at it, I was like: 'That's 9, yeah.' And that's where the title came from." (Photo by Staff Sgt. Photographers expand horizons in 2010 Army Digital Photography Contest

By Tim Hipps
FMWRC Public Affairs

ALEXANDRIA, Va. – Brenda Walker strolled upon “one of those right places at the right time” alongside East Fork Indian Creek River when she photographed “Morning Serenity” on Fort Campbell, Ky…

Retired Col. Richard Pugh shot three photographs of “Point Lobos,” just south of Monterey, Calif., and combined them into one image by working 15 minutes with Photoshop…

Staff Sgt. Pablo Piedra won a footrace with his wife to the bottom of a stairwell at Heidelberg Castle in Germany just before he looked up and photographed “9”…

…all three were winners in the 2010 Army Digital Photography Contest sponsored by the Army Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation Command.

There were 3,691 entries from around the world – 1,348 in Division I for active duty military personnel and 2,343 in Division II for other eligible MWR patrons. After Army garrisons selected their best entries, 664 Division I and 1,031 Division II photographs were forwarded for Department of the Army judging.

“There were many really excellent photos, which made the judges’ decisions a difficult task,” said Linda Ezernieks, who monitors the annual contest at Army MWR Headquarters in Alexandria. “Originality, creativity and technical quality were the main criteria in making final selections.”

Winners in each category – animals, digital darkroom, design elements, military life, monochrome, nature & landscapes, people, and still life – were posted on a website where Army Knowledge Online account-holders voted for their favorite photo in each division.

Walker’s “Morning Serenity” took first place in the nature and landscapes category and was voted the most popular photograph in Division II.

The subject of the photo is a fisherman wading and casting in the middle of East Fork Indian Creek River while the sun shines through the lush, green trees and casts a rainbow-like appearance off the steam hovering above the stream.

“It’s back on Fort Campbell,” Walker said. “I take my dog running back there early morning. It was really hot and the steam was rising and the rays were going through the trees. It was absolutely beautiful back there.

“I take my camera everywhere I go now.”

Walker left her business card on the windshield of a truck parked nearby and later learned the fisherman was Sgt. Randy Shorter of Fort Campbell.

About five years ago, Walker took some of her photographs to the MWR Custom Framing Shop at Fort Campbell, where she found out about the Army Photography Contest. She has produced prize-winning photos for the past three contests.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity to get exposure, plus cash prizes,” said Walker, 48, a military family member. “I enjoy looking at everybody else’s work. It inspires me and motivates me to get out and get more interesting, different shots.”

What does Walker enjoy most about photography?

“Just being able to capture what I see through my eyes, my heart and my head,” she said. “A lot of it comes out through your emotion. It’s another form of art.”

Pugh, of Clarksville, Tenn., took first place in the Division II digital darkroom category with “The Owl,” second in design elements with “Blue Mosque,” and third in nature and landscapes with “Point Lobos.”

Pugh shot the high-tech looking photo of “The Owl” at Land Between The Lakes, a national recreation area located south of Paducah, Ky., and embellished it in Photoshop, as he did with “Blue Mosque,” a shot of the roof of a mosque in Istanbul, Turkey.

“I like this contest,” said Pugh, 65, who photographed winning entries in each of the past three years after serving 30 years in the Army. “It gives people a chance to show off something they did, which is great.”

Piedro, 31, an Army recruiter in Douglasville, Ga., is a former combat photographer. His “9” earned first-place honors in the Division I design elements category. He took third place in digital darkroom with a self-portrait called “Beast within Me” that would make a dandy Halloween poster.

“I got the idea when I was in the gym working out with my partner and a couple people came up to us and said: ‘You guys are lifting like beasts.’ The idea just popped into my head, so I got home, took the shot, and just started editing,” Piedro said. “That’s where that photo came from.”

The subject of the photo looks like a cross between a werewolf, a vampire and an Avatar, complete with fangs, dagger-like fingernails and alien ears – seemingly howling at the moon that looms behind a naked tree.

“The fangs, the ears, the eyes and the hands are all Photoshopped,” Piedro said. “And the stomach that’s concaved a little bit, that was done in Photoshop. For the background, I took certain parts of images from other photos, adjusted them, and made everything into one image.”

So what’s real?

“The body, and the face,” Piedro replied. “That’s it.

“If you look closely, the eyes are actually black and the pupils are red, so that’s been Photoshopped.”

Piedro, however, does not think of himself as a Photoshop expert.

“I actually don’t do too much Photoshop,” he said. “I try to keep my images as pure as possible. But every now and then, I get my creative side and I do a little bit of Photoshop – just trial and error, playing around.”

Piedro won two categories and received an honorable mention in the 2007 Army Photography Contest but missed the competition the past two years.

“I think it’s a great, great program,” he said. “It’s a great way to get the creative process of people that do see the world and travel the world by being in the military, and not even just as Soldiers, but supporting staff, civilians, wives.

“It’s a great way to get recognition for something that we love to do.”

As is often the case with photography, Piedro did not know exactly what he shot that day in the stairwell to the gardens at Heidelberg Castle – until he downloaded the photo.

“When I got home and I looked at, I was like: ‘That’s 9, yeah.’ And that’s where the title came from.”

Piedro cherishes photography’s uncanny ability of giving him the opportunity of “freezing a moment in time that only I can see and sharing that with others.”

Several other military photographers earned multiple places in the 2010 Army Digital Photography Contest.

Holly Swegle of Fort Hood, Texas, took first place in Division II monochrome for “Dress Shop,” second in animals for “Painted Birds” and third in people for “American Woman.”

Lt. Col. Mark Bonica of Fort Sam Houston, Texas, took second in Division I still life with “Reflections in Soap,” third in monochrome with “… and We All Fall Down” and received an honorable mention in military life with “Free Gift When You Join Today.”

Staff Sgt. Brandon Quarterman of Fort Bliss, Texas, won the Division I popular vote contest for “Reaching Perfection,” which topped the still life category.

Protestors rally in front of Florida’s historic Capitol building in Tallahassee during the early morning hours of July 14, 2013. In the Florida State Capitol Building, just outside the Governor’s Office, Nate Wallace leaned against a cold stone wall and briefly closed his eyes.

“I’m tired,” Wallace said, wiping the sweat from his forehead and taking a drink from his water bottle. “But I can’t think of any place I’d rather be than here.”

For Wallace, a member of the Florida State University chapter of the civil rights group Dream Defenders, along with many of his fellow demonstrators, it was the second time he had been at the Capitol since Sunday, and now it was Tuesday. The group had begun occupying the lobby of Florida Gov. Rick Scott’s office earlier that morning, and many of the mostly college-aged protestors were preparing to spend the night in the Capitol.

Their goal: To demand that Gov. Scott call a state legislative session in response to George Zimmerman’s acquittal on Saturday. Zimmerman, 29, a neighborhood watch volunteer from Sanford, Fla. was charged in the shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin last year. Zimmerman claimed that he shot and killed Martin in self-defense, but the case has ignited nationwide debate over racial profiling, equal justice and self-defense.

The trial has drawn a significant response from many college-age Americans, who say Zimmerman’s actions against Martin are telling of racial attitudes and vigilante justice in the U.S.

Within minutes of Saturday’s verdict, the Dream Defenders took to social media outlets and organized a march to the Florida Capitol from the Tallahassee-Leon County Civic Center in protest of the court’s decision. The march, which took place in the early hours of Sunday, drew a crowd of more than 100 Tallahassee college students and community members and culminated in a rally on the steps of the State’s old Capitol Building.

“This generation, they said, isn’t active, isn’t willing to shape our society,” Eugene Butler III, a student senator at FSU, said late Saturday night just minutes before the student march began. Butler was joined by student leaders from across the FSU and Florida A&M University campuses. “Well, we’re here to say that what happened isn’t justice, and we’re not going to step down.”

And on Tuesday many of those same students returned to the Capitol, this time to call for the repeal of the Stand Your Ground Law, as well as for legislative attention to equal justice and racial profiling in Florida. Crowded in the Governor’s Office and throughout the halls of the Capitol, protestors played card games, read books and shared stories. The Dream Defenders, as one protestor put it, “are ready to stay for the long haul.”

The protestors were still at the Capitol Wednesday morning, preparing for the second day of their sit-in, many students ready to skip work and class in favor of the demonstration. Gov. Scott was out of the state on Tuesday, but the Dream Defenders and other supporters vowed to stay in the Governor’s Office until they are able to meet with him.

“We’re not going to leave until we’ve been heard and action has been taken,” Ky’Eisha Penn, an FSU student and a member of the Dream Defenders said, as she stood outside the Governor’s Office. “We’re here to say that we’re tired of seeing minorities treated like second-class citizens and that it’s time for a serious change in the laws.”

In the wake of Saturday’s verdict, emotions ran high as college students took the streets to protest what many of them saw as an unjust decision. Kristen Bonner was among the protestors that marched from the civic center Sunday morning. She said Zimmerman’s acquittal had left her in disbelief.

“I’m angry, I’m upset, I’m hurt that an unarmed young black man was gunned down and that the person that we know killed him is walking free today,” Bonner, a Dream Defender said during Sunday’s march. “Shit like this shouldn’t happen, and it’s just a travesty. That’s an injustice for people of color, for marginalized people, for poor people. This should never fly.”

“It’s a f***ing travesty that someone isn’t able to get justice in death. They’re being put on trial for their own death. That is not right and that should not be tolerated. It’s an entire system that goes in to oppressing and marginalizing people of color through Stand Your Ground, through the prison industrial complex, militarizing public schools and funneling children into this prison industrial complex and just criminalizing their entire experience.”

But Wallace, a member of the Dream Defenders and the president of Students United for Justice in Palestine at FSU, said he views the not guilty verdict in the Zimmerman trial as a catalyst for action on a larger scale. The problem, Wallace said, is racial attitudes and equal justice in the U.S.

“We need to talk about a law to specify what profiling is, because it’s too biased, too unjust to not be clarified at this point,” Wallace said. “We want to honor Trayvon and his family, but we want to start a larger conversation about race thinking, about mass incarceration, about healthcare, about inequality in general.”

As students marched in protest Sunday, Brian Marshall, the president of the FSU chapter of Dream Defenders said he believes that the organization is on the cusp of influencing serious change.

“This is the time for our generation to step up to the plate and make a positive impact,” Marshall said. “It’s hard to have faith in something that’s let you down like this, but we’re not going to quit; this only makes us want to try harder.”

Today was spent editing and meeting about some new projects. I'm doing a little trade with a local agency... I'm doing some photography in exchange for a more professional website. I could probably do it myself, but frankly... I know I'll never stop to do it, so I thought it would be a win win for both of us. I'm looking to create a portfolio/blog site where I can display some of my work in a more presentable way.

Speaking of blogs, I've been reading Chase Jarvis' blog for a while and have been fascinated by his use of the iPhone camera lately. Every time I look at his stuff though... I can't help but think that he's processing it somehow, cause my iPhone photos are usually a bit washed out. So I looked through the App Store and am trying out some of the photo processing programs on there. I might do an iPhone 365 week soon if I like the results... maybe. This is an example of one of those programs.

This evening I took photos of Clarissa and her friends before they went to prom. I was feeling generous and made packages to give to all of them before they returned. Had to print them at CVS though... which gave them a weird color cast... but they didn't mind.

After prom they all went to Ixtapa where Tam and I followed and had a meal ourselves.

I notice that good interior design, once rare, now is pervasive. Something has happened in the last 10 years that has enabled the best interior designers in the world to get their work spread widely. It's snowballed because now everyone has high expectations everywhere they go.

When I stayed in Houston, I went to The Magnolia hotel, since it was recommended by Tablet Hotels, which is my favorite hotel booking site. I normally don't like giant hotels that are impersonal and predictable. The hotels in the tablet line seem to put a premium on good design and are more along the "boutique" specialty locations. Often, I find, they are cheaper than the Hiltons and Hyatts of the world too.

The other half of good interior design is that it is traditionally very difficult to capture in a photograph. Have you ever been somewhere really cool, taken a shot, then gotten home and said, "well it was much cooler in person!". I think the problem lies in the detailed textures and light levels that change on a small scale. The eye can pick it up, but the typical camera method can't. Of course, this HDR method I use and describe in the tutorial is perfect for picking up the subtleties of the textures and light.

In other news, the nice people at Fotoflot sent me a sample of their work using one of my photos. I put up some photos here that you can check out.
