A cropped "Hyperbolic Projection" of a 360° Panorama on a hill at the "Cradle of Humankind" (an UNESCO World Heritage Site in Kromdraai, Gauteng, South Africa, Winter 2007).

"Mrs Ples" (Australopithecus africanus) was found in this area in 1947, and is currently the oldest human fossil found to date. This gave rise to the idea that Africa is the "Cradle of Humankind".

In 2008 two fossilised skeletons of a new species of early human "Australopithecus sediba" were discovered.

King's College Chapel, Cambridge
photo sites
Image by ** Lucky Cavey **
King's College Chapel is the chapel to King's College of the University of Cambridge, and it is considered one of the finest examples of late Perpendicular Gothic English architecture, The chapel itself was built in phases by a succession of Kings of England from 1446 to 1515, a period which spanned the Wars of the Roses. However, the chapel's large stained glass windows were not completed until 1531, and its early Renaissance rood screen was only erected in 1532-36. The chapel continues to be an active house of worship, and is renowned as the home of the King's College Choir. It is also a significant site for tourists, as well as being a commonly used symbol of the city of Cambridge.

This large, wooden screen, which separates the nave from the altar and supports the chapel organ, was erected in 1532-36 by King Henry VIII of England in celebration of his marriage to Anne Boleyn. The screen in an example of early Renaissance architecture, which is a striking contrast to the Perpendicular Gothic chapel, and it was said to be "the most exquisite piece of Italian decoration surviving in England", by Sir Nikolaus Pevsner.[8]

The Chapel is actively used as a place of worship and also for some concerts and college events. Notable college events include the annual King's College Music Society May Week Concert, held always on the Monday of May Week. This event is always highly popular amongst students, alumni and visitors to the city, not least for the complimentary strawberries and cream with Champagne, that follow the concert, outside on the Back Lawn. The King's College May Week Concert 2011 was held on Monday, 20th June.

The Chapel is noted for its splendid acoustics. The world-famous Chapel choir consists of choral scholars (male students from the college) and choristers (boys educated at the nearby King's College School), conducted by Stephen Cleobury. The choir sings services on most days in term-time, and also performs concerts and makes recordings and broadcasts.

In particular, it has broadcast its Nine Lessons and Carols on the BBC from the Chapel on Christmas Eve, when a solo treble sings the first verse of "Once in Royal David's City". Additionally, there is a mixed-voice Chapel choir of male and female students, King's Voices, which sings evensong on Mondays during term-time.

The Chapel is widely seen as the symbol of Cambridge (for example in the logo of the City Council).

Dungeness 21-04-2012

A few nice image shack images I found:

Dungeness 21-04-2012
image shack
Dungeness is a headland on the coast of Kent, England, formed largely of a shingle beach in the form of a cuspate foreland. It shelters a large area of low-lying land, Romney Marsh. Dungeness is also the name given to a “village” situated along the beach, and to an important ecological site on the same location. It is one of the largest expanses of shingle in the world. It is of international conservation importance for its geomorphology, plant and invertebrate communities and birdlife.

Dungeness is not truly a village, more a scattered collection of dwellings. Some of the homes, small wooden houses in the main, many built around old railway coaches, are owned and lived in by fishermen, whose boats lie on the beach; some are occupied by people trying to escape the pressured outside world. The shack-like properties have a high value on the property market.

Perhaps the most famous house is Prospect Cottage, formerly owned by the late artist and film director Derek Jarman. The cottage itself is painted black, with a poem, part of John Donne's “The Sunne Rising”, written on one side in black lettering. The garden however is the main attraction. Reflecting the bleak, windswept landscape of the peninsula, Derek Jarman's garden is made of pebbles, driftwood, scrap metal and a few hardy plants.

There is a remarkable and unique variety of wildlife living at Dungeness, with over 600 different types of plant (a third of all those found in Britain). It is one of the best places in Britain to find insects such as moths, bees and beetles, and spiders; many of these are very rare, some found nowhere else in Britain. The short-haired bumblebee, declared extinct in the UK nearly a decade ago, but which has survived in New Zealand after being shipped there more than 100 years ago, is to be reintroduced at Dungeness in the spring of 2010.

BACKSTORY: After the Descendents concert, we were hanging out in the parking lot waiting for it to clear out a bit before heading to the next venue for the ALL concert. Some poor girl asked us if we had jumper cables, and of course we did. She was very grateful and said, "You are like the 50th person we asked!" (What's with people not carrying jumper cables anymore? You sad, unprepared fucks!)

Anyway, while Clint was helping them, he found a frog in the parking lot. Ok, actually a toad, but still. ALL has a song called Frog, and they talk about catching a frog, and the difficulties of trying to sell it. And now we had a frog! What are the odds. Clint tried to sell the frog, but nobody wanted to buy it, as predicted by the song. The frog in the song is named Oscar, so naturally, this frog's name is now Oscar.

Oscar had an eventful evening that night. He went from the parking lot at the Festival Pier in Philadelphia to a parking garage at the next venue, spent a night in New Jersey, came back to Virginia, met our kitties, and now lives in our back yard where he has a lot of space and a creek... And no parking lots or boats mosh pits.

Dark times, bad times?
The theme "Opel" is such a multifarious theme with so many angles of view that it is difficult for me to describe the picture in a short and clear way.
recession: elegant verbalism for the market crisis. Our ancestors called it quite simply bad times.

Nice Photo Gallery photos

A few nice photo gallery images I found:

Washington DC: National Gallery of Art - East Building
photo gallery
The National Gallery of Art, administered by the Smithsonian Institute, was established on the National in 1938 by the United States Congress with funds for construction and a substantial art collection donated by Andrew W. Mellon, major art works donated by Lessing J. Rosenwald, Italian art contributions from Samuel Henry Kress, and more than 2,000 sculptures, paintings, pieces of decorative art, and porcelains from Joseph E. Widener.

The museum comprises two building, the West Building, and the East Building, which are linked by a spacious underground concourse resting beneath a series of terahedron "crystal" skylights. The West Building, composed of pink Tennessee marble, was designed in 1937 by architect John Russell Pope. Pope’s neoclassical style features a central pavilion with a gigantic columned portico and a massive dome, flanked by large, symmetrical east and west wings. In contrast, East Building, which was designed in 1978 by I.M. Pei, is sharply geometrical and fragmented. The H-shaped façade is similarly faced in pink marble from the same quarry. To emphasize the sharp angles, though, lighter stone was used for the vertical corners. The sharp fin of the west corner cleaves the air at an angle of 19.5 degrees and rises 107 feet above ground.

The West Building has an extensive collection of paintings and sculptures by European masters from the medieval period through the late 19th century, as well as pre-20th century works by American artists. The East Building focuses on modern and contemporary art. The East Building also contains the main offices of the NGA and a large research facility, Center for the Advanced Study in the Visual Arts (CASVA). To the west of the West Building, across Seventh Street, is the 6.1 acres Sculpture Garden, centered on a large circular fountain (an ice rink in the winter) surrounded by stone seating.

The Smithsonian Institution, an educational and research institute and associated museum complex, administered and funded by the government of the United States and by funds from its endowment, contributions, and profits from its shops and its magazines, was established in 1846. Although concentrated in Washington DC, its collection of over 136 million items is spread through 19 museums, a zoo, and nine research centers from New York to Panama.

Nice Image Search photos

Some cool image search images:

120 year old Bible title page (year 1885) as of 2005
image search
Full sized version of 120 year old Bible title page (as of 2005) with tape and ripped sections and rusted metal clasps. This bible was originally used in a Protestant church in Oklahoma, from a private family there. The page style is gothic. This is an unedited image - to see more details choose "All Sizes"

We donated this Bible back to the church in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. A 92 year old Seattle woman gave it to a friend who gave it immediately to me in West Seattle. She has family but no one is Christian.

As soon as it came into my posession I felt, despite the fine illustrations, unusually fine binding with metal claps and so forth, that it was to be returned to a church on the West Coast. Armed with the Web I went shopping for the right church. Someone paid a lot of money for this bible, and it should have a proper home, restoration, and care. It was too fragile, too fine, and too valuable when restored to be in my collection: I couldn't keep it, shouldn't and didn't.

Searching in Google Image Search over fast internet connection on "Churches + West Coast" when I saw a photo of the Catholic Church in Puerto Vallarta with it's crown of angels - I knew that was the place. Flying from Seattle to Guadalajara Mexico, I took the large old heavy Bible wrapped up in a clean white sheet in my suitcase. I stayed for a week with friends for my first visit to Mexico - Guadalajara is an old city and very beautiful - people took their time making beautiful architecture from stone.

From there with one of my friends I took a cosy and posh regular night bus from Guadalajara to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, and rolled it in the suitcase down the long walkway from the oldest hotel in the city to the church, several blocks away.

The friend with me was resistant to entering the Catholic Church as she is a different religion however I pursuaded her that I needed her help - which I did as it turned out because I do not speak Spanish. After holding Mass the prime priest's handler agreed that the lead priest would speak to us about the treasure we wished to donate.

However he just zipped right by us without a glance. So we asked again. The kindest sweetheart of a priest with just the kindest eyes accepted the treasure which he said could be repaired. As a priest, he has seen it all in Puerto Vallarta. He was delighted to have it, and treated it with great respect and reverance. He thanked us profusely as my friend translated.

This shot was photographed on a sheet at our hotel room, laid out on a plastic table, photographed on the deck of the room right next to the sea. With the wind blowing I had to swiftly shoot the images and not many turned out.

The right to freedom of religion is sacred. Freedom of religion means any religion. But you gotta believe in it.

This was a test of... of something I don't remember of now. Perhaps I was just playing with camera, I only had kit lens back then, which is 18-55 f/3.5-f/5.6 VR.

Handheld, 1 second exposure of my laptop's terminal, building a "buildroot" toolchain.

buildroot is used to create a linux uclibc-based toolchain (or even a tiny distro) for developers of software aimed at embedded devices such as routers/phones/etc...
For this example... well I don't remember, it may be I tried to build a MIPS toolkit yet output shows x86. :D I've already forgotten why I made it in the first place, however I used buildroot several times to build software for my Netgear WNR3500L router and Synology USB station 2.

ENGLISH
Christmas is an annual holiday that celebrates the birth of Jesus. It refers both to the day celebrating the birth; as well as to the season which that day inaugerates, and which concludes with the Feast of the Epiphany. The date of the celebration is traditional, and is not considered to be his actual date of birth. Christmas festivities often combine the commemoration of Jesus' birth with various cultural customs, many of which have been influenced by earlier winter festivals.

In most places around the world, Christmas Day is celebrated on December 25. Christmas Eve is the preceding day, December 24. In the United Kingdom and many countries of the Commonwealth, Boxing Day is the following day, December 26. In Catholic countries, Saint Stephen's Day or the Feast of St. Stephen is December 26. The Armenian Apostolic Church observes Christmas on January 6. Eastern Orthodox Churches that still use the Julian Calendar celebrate Christmas on the Julian version of 25 December, which is January 7 on the more widely used Gregorian calendar, because the two calendars are now 13 days apart.

The word Christmas originated as a contraction of "Christ's mass". It is derived from the Middle English Christemasse and Old English Cristes mæsse, a phrase first recorded in 1038, compounded from Old English derivatives of the Greek christos and the Latin missa. In early Greek versions of the New Testament, the letter Χ (chi), is the first letter of Christ. Since the mid-16th century Χ, or the similar Roman letter X, was used as an abbreviation for Christ. Hence, Xmas is often used as an abbreviation for Christmas.

After the conversion of Anglo-Saxon Britain in the very early 7th century, Christmas was referred to as geol, the name of the pre-Christian solstice festival from which the current English word 'Yule' is derived.

The prominence of Christmas Day increased gradually after Charlemagne was crowned on Christmas Day in 800. Around the 12th century, the remnants of the former Saturnalian traditions of the Romans were transferred to the Twelve Days of Christmas (26 December – 6 January). Christmas during the Middle Ages was a public festival, incorporating ivy, holly, and other evergreens, as well as gift-giving.

Modern traditions have come to include the display of Nativity scenes, Holly and Christmas trees, the exchange of gifts and cards, and the arrival of Father Christmas or Santa Claus on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning. Popular Christmas themes include the promotion of goodwill and peace.

CASTELLANO
