How to is simple: the original layer was duplicated twice

Then 1 duplicate flipped vertically and his layer mode changed in "difference", that to create more complex and intricate effect as Background

The second duplicate on top was just set in
To "lighten Only"

That add all the lighten effect in the foreground

Sharpened it using a High Pass Sharpening technique I learned in our camera club. This works in photoshop. I haven't tried it in gimp.

Steps:
1. Copy background image
2. Choose Filters -> Other -> High Pass
3. Select a suitable radius that shows the outline
4. Apply
5. Change the blending mode of the high pass layer to Overlay.
6. If you think you oversharpened, just reduce the opacity of the High Pass layer :)

I put this on a tabletop and used a fluorescent studio light from the side and a black background behind it. I took four manual exposures, with only the focus changing in each one, and then combined them in Photoshop CS4. I've seen this technique referred to as "focus stacking". It certainly provides more depth of field than the lens is capable of in a single shot.

Background Removal with the Kinect

Using the Kinect and OpenNI's user-tracking and RGB to depth alignment to remove the background from a live image. Here I replaced it with a photo I took from the top of the Empire State Building.

Imagine if the camera image of me was DSLR quality (which is totally possible right now via external camera alignment), the matte edges were cleaned up with a little bit of blur, and the lighting matched.

World passenger airline routes. Data from Google Maps, Airlineroutemaps, and individual airline websites.

The map is generally correct, but not specifically correct. Planes can, and do, follow various routes. The level of traffic indicated is based on the number of airlines flying the route, not the total number of flights on the route. Also, routes are the most recent I could find, but many are still not current. Airlines make minor changes to their routes all the time.

This is not an original idea, many others have created similar maps, but I think this is the nicest. Hope you like it.

Updated March 5, 2009. Flickr rendering was making the image fugly. Changed background to 2% gray, seems to be fixed. If you want a white background, open it in your favorite image editor and lighten it slightly.
