Plan your trip, buy your tickets online, have fun and enjoy! This is the 4th of July 2009 map and things won't likely to be change anytime soon so you can base off of it to plan your vacation. Feel free to contact me so I can add your link (images) to the location I've missed. Artwork is the property of SeaWorld San Antonio.

Contemplative vern.

The only editing of this photo was to change the color of the background. I like my orange walls but am a little tired of the monotonous backgrounds in my photos.

Fairly straightforward clone job.

Camera set up: Tripod, remote, and set to Av... I did that in an attempt to mitigate any variations resulting from the auto focus. Un-fortunately, I set the aperature too low as the sutter speed was slow enough that many of the shots I took had considerable motion blur. I'm thinking that perhaps I should've opened it up a little more. A better flash than the built-in would've been good too. Perhaps if I could've bounced light off the ceiling, the shadows I projected wouldn't have been an issue.

This image was from three different pictures. One of just the room, and one each (obviously) of the different poses. Each figure was then selected, along with their shadows. To do the selection:

-Do a rough select around the object using the free-select too.
-Toggle quick mask on shift-q
-using the paint brush, paint with black (will show up red) all the areas you don't want to select
-once you're done, toggle quick mask off (shift-q). This should leave you with the area you want to have selected.
-In this case, I feathered the selection (Select>Feather... choose amount in pixels)
-copy, paste, choose layer>New Layer, and the recently pasted image will be its own layer.

After both figures were placed on the blank background, I checked around the edges to see if anything that got copied wasn't lining up. There were a few cases where the pillows got jostled, so i used a combo of heal and clone tool to fix. These fixes are obvious upon close inspection. A better alternative would've been to extend the selection from the 'figure image' until it matched the background image. I couldn't do that in this case because the lighting was too different. The solution to that issue would be to figure out how to take pictures where the lighting doesn't vary so dramatically, or make them match in gimp.

Then I just merged the layers, played around with levels and curves. After that, in an attempt to gloss over some of the remaining discrepencies in lighting, I copied the layer, made it b&w (desaturate), and changed the mode to 'hard light'.

I'm doing a few of these from different poses, if you want to check my photostream.

If you have any suggestions on how this could've been done better, I'd love to hear them in comments.

This is my hectoring library advocacy poster! The point is that if someone asks you about libraries and you don't give a good account of yourself and your profession, you aren't just abstaining, you're actually doing damage.

Let's change people's perceptions. Put this poster up online! Feel free to use this where-ever and whenever, with attribution.

1 source tile from source-image
change background image
Here i modify the source image to create the tile to be used to compose all other variants

How to is simple: the original layer was duplicated twice

Then 1 duplicate flipped vertically and his layer mode changed in "difference", that to create more complex and intricate effect as Background

The second duplicate on top was just set in
To "lighten Only"

That add all the lighten effect in the foreground

Sharpened it using a High Pass Sharpening technique I learned in our camera club. This works in photoshop. I haven't tried it in gimp.

Steps:
1. Copy background image
2. Choose Filters -> Other -> High Pass
3. Select a suitable radius that shows the outline
4. Apply
5. Change the blending mode of the high pass layer to Overlay.
6. If you think you oversharpened, just reduce the opacity of the High Pass layer :)

I put this on a tabletop and used a fluorescent studio light from the side and a black background behind it. I took four manual exposures, with only the focus changing in each one, and then combined them in Photoshop CS4. I've seen this technique referred to as "focus stacking". It certainly provides more depth of field than the lens is capable of in a single shot.

To see more images on which I've used this technique, please see my Maximum Depth of Field set. www.flickr.com/photos/9422878@N08/sets/72157624044378381/

World Airline Routes

NOTE! This image has a Wikipedia license. You can do whatever you want with it and don't need my permission. Go wild!

----------------------------------

World passenger airline routes. Data from Google Maps, Airlineroutemaps, and individual airline websites.

The map is generally correct, but not specifically correct. Planes can, and do, follow various routes. The level of traffic indicated is based on the number of airlines flying the route, not the total number of flights on the route. Also, routes are the most recent I could find, but many are still not current. Airlines make minor changes to their routes all the time.

This is not an original idea, many others have created similar maps, but I think this is the nicest. Hope you like it.

Updated Feb 27, 2009. Background now white, fixed inconsistent appearance in some places, higher quality export from Illustrator, more manageable size.

Updated March 5, 2009. Flickr rendering was making the image fugly. Changed background to 2% gray, seems to be fixed. If you want a white background, open it in your favorite image editor and lighten it slightly.

All Prints Going Offline - Going Dark
We are changing the way we handle prints here. In the past, we have done what everyone else does, which is dump a ton of prints into an online printing service. I'm not convinced that's the best way thing for our customers. We are going to do something different and bold, and we are launching in a few days. I think it will be much more meaningful for fans, collectors, and everyone in between.

For now, we are taking all printing options offline. Stay tuned for Friday for the big announcement!

Photoblog Awards - Come Vote
Thanks for all the votes already! There are just a few days left, so now is the perfect time to vote. If you do enjoy the images here and think the world should know, then I would certainly appreciate it!

Daily Photo - Entering The Forest Alone
It's not often I use a zoom lens to do landscape photography, since the conditions have to be just right (at least, for me). You do get this strange thing called "compression", which will be a new concept for people that come here not familiar with photography techniques. Maybe you have seen this in horror movies... You know, someone gets some shocking news, and then the camera does this strange thing where it pulls out and the background flexes while the actor remains still. Well, compression is kind like that, but not really. But it can bring things in the far distance "forward" to appear bigger than they really are, as is the case with the distant blue forest in this shot from Yellowstone.

Believe it or not, I was so exhausted after I took this shot, I pulled over and slept for two hours in the backseat. There is nothing worse than waking up, groggy in the backseat of a strange car, and a tripod jamming you in the small of the back.

#25. Brightness in #24 reduced from 0 to -50. Click on All Sizes to view Original.

RTM-1 is the pair of blue spots just above the large magenta galaxy in the lower left. There are six more suggestive blue spot pairs in this field.

RTM-1, closeup view in #21, is very like CSL-1, only blue and more separated, but with the similar equality of size and color. It turns out that there are so many easily found pairs of all sizes, down to single pixel bright spots separated by a pixel space, that statistical studies are appropriate.

If you inspect this carefully, especially holding a 4 inch reading glass close to both of your eyes, focussing on the tiny bright blue sources, you will easily discern many suggestive pairs, right down to the limit of two single pixel spots separated by a pixel, or even the many double pixel spots.

The two sides of the convex reading glass function as opposed prisms, separating the reds and blues in such a way as to make the reds appear about a centimeter closer, creating a lovely, revealing 3D image, while moving the glass back and forth can flexibly adjust the smoothness and the sharpness of the image.

I found that using a 6"X5" concave glass, which in effect has prisms opposed in the opposite direction of a convex lens, makes a smaller overall image in which the blues appear closer than the reds, which I surmise is the actual reality for these images for the tiny, subtle background features, the myriad minute bright blue sources on the apparently more distant, dark magenta mesh.

The 1-2 mm red and blue sources are much closer galaxies, with their apparent colors determined by their actual temperature and the amount of redshifting, which grows linearly with distance. Much nearer to us, of course are the three 1-5 cm galaxies, while the central red star is very much closer, in our own galaxy.

This field is 61 sec wide = 1 minute.

Theory predicts that many more cosmic strings would have been formed early in the drastic phase changes during the very early expansion of our Universe bubble, and that these strings would decay by vibrating fiercely and interacting with themselves and each other, giving off energy as gravitational radiation, and so decreasing in number per volume of space. Hence, there should be more gravitational lens pairs appearing as we view earlier and earlier epoches.

This can be researched by software that measures accurately the rate of pairing as the size of the pairs decreases, leading to accurate information about the cosmic strings and thus cutting edge areas of fundamental physics.

If it is possible to extract Doppler shift information, subtle red and blue light shifting, from the single or few pixel pairs, then gravitational lens pairs could be distinguished from pairs in close, rapid orbit around each other.

If the orbital periods were less than a few years, then closeups from different times might find shifts suggestive of orbiting pairs, and disclose enough information to get the orbital periods.

Since some strings may be moving, rotating, or vibrating at relativistic speeds, above 10% of the speed of light, their gravitational lensing effects on more distant galaxies may change visibly within a few years. his could be checked by having a dedicated ground telescope maintain a constant vigil on a fixed small region of the deep sky for years.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cosmic_strings Wikipeia encyclopedia article on cosmic strings and CSL-1:

'Cosmic strings, if they exist, would be extremely thin with diameters on the same order as a proton. They would have immense density, however, and so would represent significant gravitational sources. A cosmic string 1.6 kilometers in length would exert more gravity than the Earth. Cosmic strings would form a network of loops in the early universe, and their gravity could have been responsible for the original clumping of matter into galactic superclusters.'

Southend On Sea tilt and shift
change background image
This hasnt worked very well, really for a good tilt and shift the wide angle lens is a must, also i was to short to see over the panels at pier hill so took a chance and swung the camera over the top

I did this a different way this time
duplicate background image, add about 4-6 Gaussian blur
then add a level adjustments layer just click ok dont change any thing, move the duplicated layer above the adjustment layer and group together (ctlrg)
next click on the mask next to the levels adjustment layer select gradient tool black and white preset select reflective, hold down the shift key and draw a line from where the image meets the horizon to about half way down

then its just a case of tidying up before you merge the image
