Gifts from wedding couple, part 1
photo gifts
A very close friend was married this past weekend in a ceremony that included components of Native American traditions. It was a fabulous event to witness. Part of the tradition included the couple giving symbolic gifts to the guests. Vergy's gift to the women, as well as to five of us men who are close to her and would 'get' what these items meant, was this vessel of water, a candle/votive, stones, and a chime (seen in the next photo). Her husband's gift was a fishhook and spinner engraved with the wedding date and placed in a bag with a label reading, "Catch Yourself a Keeper." I felt these gifts were extremely well-thought and significant.

When Carol had a trip to Okinawa, she sent a postcard to me.
I also got a postcard from Andytn when he cycled around Taiwan.

EbiTasha bought me the funny poker which called “鷓鴣菜“.
Stephenlee gave me a special strap for my camera.

The door mat of 7-11 OPEN - chan was from Sunline.
And the flip flops, card reader, and all the other things of OPEN - chan were from Jenhsiou.

Thank you all.
I'm so happy to get all these gifts.
I love them so much. :D

Day 248 - Thoughtful gifts, Salvadoran style
photo gifts
Last night, after we finished testing the lights at the stadium, I got a ride with the engineers as far as Arambala, where I paid Melinda a surprise visit. She was exuberant, as unplanned visits between us are generally impossible, given that we are subject to bus schedules. This morning, we talked about some of the ways that our relationship will change when we are both back in the United States. One thing that we don't plan on changing very much, however, is the type of gifts we exchange.

Here I've made a collage of nine of the gifts I have received from Melinda, most of which she made herself, and a couple of which she made from trash. Scroll your mouse over the photo to see a description of each item.

Silver Gift Boxes

When shooting these silver gift boxes we chose purple and pink ribbons for adding pop to the photo. What's also impressive is that these boxes are made from 100% recycled materials, and recyclable.

You've probably noticed the Freya Collection logo on the bottom box, they're a Premier customer that specializes in sterling jewelry in Ontario Canada.

The gift is a Nigerian wood carving of a cyclist carring a bundle on his bike. It's next to my photo for comparison. She says it resembles me. MMM Black man riding a bike, I'm not seeing it ;)

Thanks for putting the great idea in my head, Diana.

I'm going to make a bunch of washcloths with organic cotton and gift locally handmade soap, organic chocolates and organic teas. Super easy to make and the quick knit makes me feel satisfied!

A couple people will get embroidered tea towels instead of the washcloths. Hooray for getting a head start!

Wooden Crown Magnets for 3rd Grade Gifts ~ 2 of 2 photos
photo gifts
My step sister, a teacher, always wants to give the kids a special gift at the end of the school year. These started as those 25 cent bare wood cutouts one finds at the big craft stores.

Utilizing metallic acrylic paint, glitter glue, a glue stick, sequins, and school photos, I was able to create 28 awesome large magnet keepsakes.

This would also be a great project to actually do with students in the classroom.

Or have premade up and sell at craft fairs or fundraisers....the buyer takes them home and glues on their own child's photo.

Oooh~~~ a birthday party craft...this would be extremely fun and inexpensive for the kids. You could have containers of beads, macaroni or plastic letters to glue on names with gel glue, puffy paints, glitter, etc.

I can also see these created into little magnetized locker mirrors....for the older teens. Perhaps with some colorful mosaics.

Decorative Hexagonal Origami Gift Boxs with Lids
photo gifts
This is a poster created to promote the sale of some Hexagonal Origami Gift Boxes in support of the survivors of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami.

(The best quality version of this image is here.)

The poster / flyer is intended to be square - like origami paper - so there are crop marks at each corner to assisting in cutting the printed out paper to the correct shape. A version of this image without borders and crop marks can be found here.

You can see views of all 20 boxes individually for sale in a set here.

You can plunge into the eBay auctions here.

Gift Holder from Recycled Cardboard Tube ~ 3 of 3 photos

Continued for last photo:

Wouldn't a bunch of these (holding candy, jewelry, charms, etc) be great on a tree? I think one could even create an advent calendar if they were numbered.
