Straight out of the camera, but seriously cropped. I know that they are pests, but they are photogenic pests.

In spite of the serious cropping, there is an Original size available, which makes these more spectacular.

I am happy to refer you to my aphids gallery, which has some good photos by other Flickr members.

New Orleans - French Quarter: Jackson Square and St. Louis Cathedral

Jackson Square, a rectangular plot of land, roughly the size of a city-block, marks the site of the original settlement of New Orleans by the French Mississippi Company. Known at the time as Place d'Armes, it was designed in 1721 by landscape architect, Louis H. Pilié. It originally served as military parade grounds, and later as a market place and site for executions. Today it is a well manicured park and the spiritual center of the French Quarter.

From 1762-1803, after New Orleans was ceded to Spain in the Treaty of Paris and served as the Capital of the French Province of Louisiana, it bore the spanish translation of its original name, Plaza de Armas. After being returned to French control in 1801, the city was part of the land sold to the United States in the Louisiana purchase in 1803. It was in the Place d'Armes that the American flag was first raised over the newly purchased territory.

After the Battle of New Orleans, the final major battle of the War of 1812, the plaza was renamed in honor of General Andrew Jackson, an American military commander in the battle who would go on to serve as the seventh President of the United States, from 1829-1837. In 1856 the Baroness Celestin Pontalba paid for the square's beautification. Under her auspices, the Pelanne brothers designed the wrought-iron fence surrounding the park and on February 8, 1856, sculptor Clark Mills' equestrian statue of Jackson was dedicated in the center of the park. The statue, one of three identical casts (the others are in Washington D.C. and Nashville, TN), depicts General Jackson reviewing his troops at the Battle and was the first to ever depict a hero astride a rearing horse. After occupying the city after the Civil War's Battle of New Orleans in 1862, Union General Benjamin "Beast" Butler engraved "The Union Must and Shall Be Preserved" on the plinth.

Surrounding the park is a pedestrian plaza. Diverse artists rent space and hang their works on the fence, and jazz musicians, tarot card readers, and clowns entertain throngs of tourists. When originally laid out, the plaza overlooked the Mississippi River, but the view was blocked in the 19th century by larger levees. Under the administration of Mayor Moon Landrieu, a scenic boardwalk, known as Moon Walk, was built along the river. Flanking the uptown and downtown sides of the Square, are the Pontalba Buildings, matching red-brick block long 4-story buildings erected in the 1840's. The ground floors house shops and restaurants; the upper floors are apartments that are the oldest continuously rented in America.

On the Place John Paul II, the promenaded section of Chartres Street stretching the last length of the park, sit three historic buildings financed by Don Andrès Alomonester y Rojas, the Baroness Pontalba's father. The center of the three is St. Louis Cathedral. To its left is the Cabildo, built in 1795. It served as the capitol for the Spanish colonial government, then later as City Hall, and home of the State Supreme Court, and today houses the Louisiana State Museum. It was here that the finalization of the Louisiana Purchase was signed. To the cathedral's right is the Presbytère, built between 1794 and 1813. It originally housed the city's Roman Catholic priests and authorities, and then served as a courthouse until 1911. Today it is part of the Louisiana State Museum, housing a Mardi Gras Exhibit.

The Saint Louis Cathedral is the oldest, continuously operating cathedral in the United States and the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New Orleans. Three Roman Catholic churches have sat on this site since 1718. The cornerstone of the present structure, designed by Gilberto Guillemard, was laid in 1789, elevated to cathedral status in 1794 and completed in 1795. In 1819, Henry S. Boneval Latrobe added the clock and bell tower. Between 1845 and 1851, J.N.B. DePouilly remodeled and enlarged the church. In 1964, the cathedral was designated as a minor basilica by Pope Paul VI. Pope John Paul II visited the basilica, on the occassion of his second pastoral visit in the United States on September 12, 1987.

ENGLISH
Spanish (español) or Castilian (castellano) is an Indo-European, Romance language that originated in northern Spain, and gradually spread in the Kingdom of Castile and evolved into the principal language of government and trade. It was taken to Africa, the Americas, and Asia Pacific with the expansion of the Spanish Empire between the fifteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Today, between 322 and 400 million people speak Spanish as a native language, making it the world's second most-spoken language by native speakers (after Mandarin Chinese).

Spanish evolved from Vulgar Latin, with major influences from Arabic in vocabulary during the Andalusian period and minor surviving influences from Basque and Celtiberian, as well as Germanic languages via the Visigoths. Spanish developed along the remote cross road strips among the Alava, Cantabria, Burgos, Soria and La Rioja provinces of Northern Spain, as a strongly innovative and differing variant from its nearest cousin, Leonese speech, with a higher degree of Basque influence in these regions (see Iberian Romance languages). Typical features of Spanish diachronical phonology include lenition (Latin vita, Spanish vida), palatalization (Latin annum, Spanish año, and Latin anellum, Spanish anillo) and diphthongation (stem-changing) of short e and o from Vulgar Latin (Latin terra, Spanish tierra; Latin novus, Spanish nuevo). Similar phenomena can be found in other Romance languages as well.

During the Reconquista, this northern dialect from Cantabria was carried south, and remains a minority language in the northern coastal Morocco.

The first Latin-to-Spanish grammar (Gramática de la Lengua Castellana) was written in Salamanca, Spain, in 1492, by Elio Antonio de Nebrija. When it was presented to Isabel de Castilla, she asked, "What do I want a work like this for, if I already know the language?", to which he replied, "Your highness, the language is the instrument of the Empire."

From the 16th century onwards, the language was taken to the Americas and the Spanish East Indies via Spanish colonization.

Catalan is a Romance language, the national language of Andorra, and a co-official language in the Spanish autonomous communities of the Balearic Islands, Catalonia and Valencia—where it is known as Valencian— and in the city of Alghero in the Italian island of Sardinia. It is also spoken, although with no official recognition, in the autonomous communities of Aragon (in La Franja) and Murcia (in El Carxe) in Spain, and in the historic Roussillon region of southern France, roughly equivalent to the current département of the Pyrénées-Orientales (Northern Catalonia).

Catalan language developed by the 9th century from Vulgar Latin on both sides of the eastern part of Pyrenees mountains (counties of Roussillon, Empúries, Besalú, Cerdanya, Urgell, Pallars and Ribagorça). It shares features with Gallo-romance and Ibero-romance, and it could be said to be in its beginnings no more than an eccentric dialect of Occitan (or of Western Romance).

As a consequence of the Catalan conquests from Al-Andalus to the south and to the west, it spread to all present-day Catalonia, Balearic Islands and most of Valencia.

During the 15th century, during the Valencian Golden Age, the Catalan language reached its highest cultural splendor, which was not matched again until La Renaixença, 4 centuries later.

CASTELLANO

Val a dir que aqueix acte no comporta pas cap conseqüència ni té pas cap valor legal a l'estat francès.

König/Kaiser Wilhelm I. zeigte wenig Interesse an Charlottenburg.

Im sogenannten „Dreikaiserjahr“ 1888 diente das Schloss König Friedrich III., dem todkranken „99-Tage-Kaiser“ als Residenz.

Actual-size example of a homemade edge-punched 3x5 index card. The holes were put in by Staples binding service -- spiral binding without the spiral. I chopped off the corner with a guillotine cutter, and the red overlays show different hole punch sizes I've tried for notching. See photo notes for more details.

I plan to use these for NaNoWriMo to keep track my various story ideas. See my blog entry about this.

There's a video demonstration of using these cards, too.

The Nokia 808 Pureview is a phenomenal camera considering its strapped onto a phone. It's Achilles heel though is pretty poor dynamic range. For instance this shot has a bright sky and relatively darker foreground. You can either overexpose the picture a bit to get the foreground or underexpose a bit to get the sky correctly exposed. The Nokia 808 , since it produces JPG and not RAW files is pretty good at retrieving image details from shadow areas but produces TERRIBLE results if you try and retrieve details from the highlights (bright areas). So always underexpose a bit to ensure your brightest objects still have detail and you will be able to get a decent photo once you edit it in photoshop. Its a basic rule of photography but probably something many photography enthusiasts who buy the Nokia phone may not know as I've seen tons of such shots with blown highlights on various sites :-)

The Borgward Isabella is a medium sized two door saloon that was manufactured by the Bremen based auto-manufacturer Carl F. W. Borgward GmbH between 1954 and 1962. Initially the car was badged, like its predecessor, as the Hansa 1500, but within the company it was known from the beginning by the code name, Isabella (not after Carl Borgward's wife whose name was Elisabeth), and cars produced after 1957 bore the ‘Isabella’ name, inscribed eye catchingly within the rhombus at the centre of the front grill: in retrospect the car produced from 1954 is known as the Isabella to differentiate it from the (first) Hansa 1500/1800 which the company produced between 1949 and 1954.
Despite its aspirational positioning in the marketplace, the Isabella had a smaller engine (and was marginally shorter) than its immediate predecessor. Late in 1952 the firm had launched their six cylinder Hansa 2400 model. The larger car never found many buyers; but in 1954 it made commercial sense to keep the two models from competing too directly with one another.

The Oldsmobile 88 (a.k.a. Eighty-Eight) is a full-size car sold by the Oldsmobile division of General Motors and produced from 1949 until 1999. From 1950 to 1974 the 88 was the division's top-selling line, particularly the entry-level models such as the 88 and Dynamic 88. The 88 series was also an image leader for Oldsmobile, particularly in the early years (1949–51) when it was one of the best performing automobiles thanks to its relatively small size, light weight and advanced overhead-valve high-compression V8 engine originally designed for the larger and more luxurious 98 series but dropped into the smaller six-cylinder Oldsmobile 76 body, creating what was considered the predecessor of musclecars of the 1960s.

A large number of variations in nomenclature were seen over this long model run—Delmont, Delta, Dynamic, Jetstar, Starfire, Super, Holiday, L/S, LSS, Celebrity, and Royale were used at various times with the 88 badge, and Fiesta appeared on some station wagons in the 1950s and 1960s. The name was more commonly shown as numbers in the earlier years ("Delta 88", for example) and was changed to spell-out "Eighty Eight" starting in 1989.

The Oldsmobile Eighty Eight was produced in Wentzville, Missouri; Flint, Michigan; and Lake Orion, Michigan.

Goliath was a German car brand started in 1928 and which was part of the Borgward group. Goliath was based in Bremen and specialized in three-wheeler cars and trucks and medium-sized cars.

The company Goliath-Werke Borgward & Co. was created by Carl F. W. Borgward and Wilhelm Tecklenburg in 1928. The first models were three-wheelers trucks derived from the Blitzkarren previously built by Borgward. The first passenger car was the Goliath Pionier in 1931, which still had three wheels and a one-cylinder engine. Until 1934, 4000 of these small cars where produced in various types of body. The Pionier was considered as a forerunner of the Hansa models 400 and 500.

These were front-wheel-drive two-door sedans.

Goliath GP700 (1950–1957) — two-cylinder, inline, two-stroke, water-cooled, transverse engine (anticipating the Mini and many recent cars). In 1952 introduced Bosch direct fuel injection, around the same time as the Gutbrod Superior 600; they were the first two cars to use this technology.

Goliath GP900 (1955–1957) — two-cylinder, inline two-stroke, water-cooled, transverse engine, Bosch direct fuel injection.

1956 Lloyd LP 250 (03)
picture sizes
The Lloyd LP 250 is a small car introduced in June 1956 and offered for sale till 1957 by Lloyd Motoren Werke G.m.b.H. of Bremen. The body and running gear came from the existing Lloyd LP 400. The LP 250 differed in having the size of its two cylinder two stroke engine reduced to 250 cc. This produced a claimed maximum power of just 8 kW (11 PS) at 5000 rpm, less, even, than the 9.8 kW (13 PS) of the LP 400.

The Lloyd LP 250 became known in Germany as the “Driving Test Nerves Car” („Prüfungsangst-Auto“ ) because, under the licence classifications then in force, vehicles having an engine capacity below 250 cc fell into a more accessible drivers’ licence category (Licence Category 4) than larger engined cars.[1] Presumably at the time when the drivers’ licence categories were devised it had not occurred to the legislators that such a category might include a four seater passenger car. In later years elderly motorists who had never acquired a more conventional drivers’ licence were happy to spell out that "vehicles" in this case included cars as evidence that they were indeed licensed to drive cars and did not need to take the additional test normally necessary for driving passenger cars (Licence Category 3).

On its introduction in summer 1956 the car lacked some of the relatively luxurious features included on the LP 400 sister model. It came without hubcaps, bumpers or a backrest for passengers in the back seat. The car was offered for sale at just DM 2,980, though the missing features were available at extra cost as options. A more fully equipped version, the LP 250 V, replaced the basic LP 250 in April 1957, the formerly optional fittings becoming standard features: the price was increased to DM 3,350, however, which was the same as the price quoted for the more powerful LP 400.

In total, 3,768 Lloyd LP 250 / LP 250Vs were produced.

(Wikipedia)

3768 LP 250 bzw. LP 250 V wurden gebaut.

1971 Mercedes R107 (22)
picture sizes
The Mercedes-Benz R107 automobiles were produced from 1971 through 1989, being the longest single series ever produced by the firm, besides the G-Class. They were sold under the SL-Class and SLC-Class model names. The R107 replaced the W113 SL-Class in 1972 and was replaced by the R129 SL-Class in 1989.

The R107 took the chassis components of the mid size Mercedes-Benz W114 model and mated them to the larger engines from the S-Class. The W 107 chassis is also referred to as "R 107" for "Reihe" (series). The series comprised SL and SLC models.

The SL variant was a 2-seat convertible/roadster with standard soft top and hardtop. The SLC (technically C107) derivative was a 2 door hardtop coupe, with usable rear seats and in effect an SL stretched 10 inches (254 mm) with a fixed roof. Although some may air this car as an 'SL coupe'- though technically it might be, but in the real world it was an S-class coupe (modern day CL), replacing the former saloon-based 280/300SE coupé in Mercedes` lineup. The SLC was replaced earlier than the SL, in 1981, with a much larger model, the 380SEC. It was aimed at the same market as more exotic machines like the Jaguar E-Type and Citroën SM.

The 107 chassis had the longest run of any Mercedes chassis, 18 years from 1971 to 1989. Some 237,000 107 chassis SL's were built. About two thirds were sold in the US. These 107 cars are larger, heavier and more costly than the previous generation W113 SL cars.

Volume production of the first R107 car, the 350 SL, started in April, 1971 alongside the last of the W 113 cars; the 350 SLC followed in October. Early North American cars wore the name 350 SL, but had a larger 4.5L V8 (and were renamed 450 SL/SLC for model year 1973); the big V8 became available on other markets with the official introduction of the 450 SL/SLC on non-North American markets in March, 1973.

From July, 1974 both SL and SLC could also be ordered with a fuel-injected 2.8L straight-6 as 280 SL and SLC.

In September, 1977 the 450 SLC 5.0 joined the line. This was a special version of the big coupé featuring a bored five-liter version of the 4.5L V8, some light alloy body panels and a black plastic rear spoiler.

The 350, 450 and 450 SLC 5.0 models (like the 350 and 450 SL) were discontinued in 1980 with the introduction of the 380 and 500 SLC in March, 1980. At the same time, the cars received a very mild make-over; the 3-speed automatic was replaced by a four-speed unit, the 280 models came with a standard 5-speed (formerly a 4-speed) manual and all five-liter cars gained a black rear spoiler lip.

The 280, 380 and 500SLC were discontinued in 1981 with the introduction of the 126 series 380 and 500SEC coupes. A total of 62,888 SLCs had been manufactured over a ten year period of which just 1,636 were the 450SLC-5.0 and 1,133 were the 500SLC. Both these models are sought by collectors today. The SLC remains the only fixed roof Mercedes-Benz coupe based on a roadster rather than a sedan. Even today, an SLC in good mechanical condition still gives a mix of good performance, superb handling, comfort and safety, making it is easy to realise why they were a successful rally car.

Following the discontinuation of the SLC in September, 1981, the 107 series continued initially as the 280, 380 and 500SL. At this time, the V8 engines were re-tuned for greater efficiency, lost a few hp and consumed less fuel, helped by substantially numerically shorter axle ratios (that went from 3.27:1 to 2.47:1 for the 380 SL and from 2.72:1 to 2.27:1 for the 500 SL). From September, 1985 the 280SL was replaced by a new 300 SL, and the 380 SL by a 420 SL; the 500 SL continued and a 560SL was introduced for certain extra-European markets, most notably the USA. The final R107 SL was built on August 4, 1989. This eighteen-year run makes the 107 series the longest running series produced by Daimler-Benz.

The last 107 made, a 1989 500SL painted Astral Silver, resides in the Mercedes-Benz museum in Stuttgart, Germany. The W107 series today is prized by classic car collectors; almost all usable examples are worth £5000+ apiece, with the highest-range models sometimes worth £10,000 or more.

Scratch One Comet [video]
photo sizes
Image by NASA Goddard Photo and Video
A medium-sized comet headed right for Sun and it was a one-way trip (Oct. 19, 2011). This movie shows the comet as it headed towards the Sun through SOHO's LASCO C3 coronagraph (blue), into its narrow field of view C2 coronagraph (red), while we show the Sun from SDO in extreme UV light. This comet likely belonged to the Kreutz family of comets, smaller pieces that broke away from a much larger comet hundreds of years ago and are often found heading into the Sun. Although we did not get to see it directly impact the Sun (something that has never been seen), it did not come out the other side either.

The faint lines are friendship links, darkened if they have a common photo appearance. The auto-clustering algorithm also uses highlight colors for each clique (a clique has many in-group friendship links and few links to people outside the group). Looks like a big pile of pinkos to me.

Friends are also ranked using “betweeness centrality” to measure their importance in the social network; high rank goes to those who connect different cliques.

The green cloud shows common profile tags among sub-groups.

Good to see most of my friends smiling… =D

Leica D-Lux 5
photo sizes
Because of its large size, I've been using my 5D Mk2 less and less. So, I sold one of my Canon lenses to get the D-Lux 5.

I am not writing to endorse either product, or tell you which I think is better. The results are subjective and dependent of a photographer's skills. So, why the D-Lux 5 and not the Panasonic LX-5 which is essentially the same camera with a cheapter price tag?

I've owned both the D-Lux 4 and the Panasonic LX3. After shooting with an LX3 for well over a year, I sold it to purchase the D-Lux 4. I then sold the D-Lux 4 around when D-Lux 5 was announced.

I chose D-Lux 5 because:

1. I dislike the look of the Panasonic LX-5. I like the design of the D-Lux--it's simple, understated yet elegant. I'm a designer so, I do care about the looks.

In fact,I don't care about the "red dot." I would much prefer it without the Leica logo and just plain black.

2. I get a legitimate version of Adobe Lightroom--LR is an important tool to me, because I post-process most, if not all of my images.

3. I prefer how the D-Lux renders the colors and out of focus areas. The difference is not obvious unless you've shot with Leica lenses on Leica digital cameras.

Most people don't believe in the existence of the "Leica-look," nor care. But, IMO, it's there--through a little post-processing. Just like how Foveon images have their "look" when processed using Sigma Pro Photo Software, Leica D-Lux 4 has a smoother blur and more 3-Dness when post-processed vignette is added and through a little tweak of levels. Panasonic rendering simply do not have it (in the same way Leica does). Now, I haven't fully tested the D-Lux 5, but I presume it'll be similar to the D-Lux 4 results (and hopefully better).

4. D-Lux resale value is better. I tend to cycle through my digital cameras rather quickly.

Now, I'm looking forward to shooting with it and taking it with me to a trip to Myanmar. My thoughts on it will definitely be posted on Flickr.

1956 - 1970 Volvo Amazon (09)
picture sizes
The Volvo Amazon is a mid-size car manufactured by Volvo Cars from 1956 to 1970, and introduced in the USA, as the 122S at the New York International Auto Show in April 1959.

The Amazon shared both the wheelbase from its predecessor, the PV, as well as its tall posture and high H-point seating — while offering three model configurations: 2-door sedan, 4-door sedan and wagon. In 1959 Volvo provided front seat belts as standard equipment on all the cars, including the export models, becoming the world's first manufacturer to take this step — later becoming the first car featuring three-point seat belts.

When introduced, the car was called the Amason (with an 's'), which derives from the fierce female warriors of Greek mythology, the Amazons. Kreidler, German manufacturer of motorcycles had already registered the name, and the two companies agreed Volvo could only use the name domestically (i.e., within Sweden), modifying the spelling to Amazon. Subsequently, Volvo began its tri-digit nomenclature and the line became known as the 120 Series.

(Wikipedia)
