Gift card to shopping nirvana

Just a few snapshots of our little family enjoying the season. While they are not spectacular, they are greatly improved over the blue tinged, harshly shadowed, redeyed, nasty flash I used to use.

Technique: Similar to this Strobist blog post.

More images in this series.

Strobist info:
1 - SB-600 into 43" convertible umbrella (used conventionally) on 10' Amvona light stand
1 - SB-600, wide diffuser fired at the ceiling
1 - SB-800 with diffuser cap, used as master and for fill.
All triggered via CLS.
All gelled with 1/2 CTO to get close to the ambient.

Variety of settings used, but generally:
D300 - manual mode
F2.8 - F5.6
1/160 - 1/250
ISO 400 - 800
(Hey, a little experimentation going on here!)

Finally figured out that it is better to shoot with camera on manual mode even though CLS does the exposure work!

Writing greetings cards today, I took loads of xmas related photos in November and then I couldn't decide which one I liked the most to use on all my cards so I got one of each via moo instead. Not the best plan in the world, I think that I am still going to be using them next year. Whoops.

25 Days of Christmas Challenge - Day 19

This picture was actually an accident. I was trying to get a picture of this ornament for my parents Christmas card on a black background. I shot it from the side, not thinking about the background When I reviewed the picture, I thought it looked cool. Kinda looks like Santa is riding a wave of Christmas light bokeh.

These friends of mine wanted an Aussie Christmas card to send back to their snow-driven families back home in Norway. I thought this was a pretty cool concept.

Text reads: Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

The Beatles and Led Zeppelin poster were my two physical birthday gifts that I got yesterday. And I did a decent amount of rearranging, moving a load of new cards to the area under the right side of the Abbey Road poster. And I moved the Scott Pilgrim poster from roughly where the Led Zeppelin poster is to where is is now.

This is the photo I used for our 2011 Christmas card. It's a shot I had previsualized for months. Shot with a Nikon D90 with a Nikkor 24-70 f/2.8 lens. Fired two SB600s off-camera through umbrellas to create the lighting. Minor adjustments in CS5.

Who's Telling Your Story?
photo card
I’ve never been interested in predictions about the future, although I will admit to being smitten with the idea that a whole life can be written in the lines of a hand, or that a spot of tea in the afternoon might begin with a spoon of sugar and end in a shadowy prophecy at the bottom of a mug.

But there’s a lot of romance in the art of fortune telling -- much that’s appealing in the notion that all of the events of your existence are somehow contained, from the very beginning, within you or about your person. All of your successes and failures swirling around you like mists, waiting to be divined by the nearest interpreter.

Or maybe it's really the nearest storyteller. And after all, which one of us could say that she doesn’t enjoy hearing stories about herself?

Still, if you don’t believe in psychic forces there’s not much to be said for having your palm read, or your tea leaves, or your Tarot cards. If you don’t believe in psychic forces, it’s just you and a woman in scarves making up stories about you, really, and taking your money into the bargain. Isn’t it?

Well, usually it is. But not if you have someone like Anya Weber sitting opposite you at the table.

Anya is a petite, no-nonsense editor who works for a school publisher by day and writes plays and screenplays by night. She wears serious wire-rimmed glasses, behind which sit a pair of unusually thoughtful eyes. Her back is straight, her conversation sharp, and she impresses new acquaintances with her grave intelligence and sly sense of humor.

She also happens to be a Tarot reader, and has been for the past 13 years – ever since a college roommate with less persistent inclinations bought and abandoned a deck. Anya insists, though, that she doesn’t use the cards to tell the future. Instead, she’s part of a psychological tradition in the world of Tarot. During readings, she explains to her clients what she believes the cards they’ve chosen can mean, and invites them to form personal interpretations based on their own understandings of what’s important in their lives.

In effect, rather than trying to tell their stories for them, Anya gives people the tools to become their own storytellers.

At least, that’s how I see it. But since I want to observe this process for myself, we arrange for her to conduct a reading where I can be in attendance.

Moo cards
photo card
My Moo cards arrived yesterday, and they're bloody gorgeous. The print quality is excellent, and the card is much sturdier than I'd imagined. I am slightly sorry I decided I didn't have one hundred photos that were good enough to make into cards. Instead, I went for two sets of fifty. Now I just have to decide what I'm going to do with them. Make a collage of one set of fifty and hand the other lot out, perhaps.

Feel free to add notes.

(Yeah, okay, I cheated. These aren't the actual cards – all my pictures of them were blurred. Must do something about them shakes.)

Lenin in Fremont
The Statue of Lenin in Seattle is a 16 foot (5 m) bronze sculpture of Bolshevik Russian Communist revolutionary Vladimir Lenin located in the Fremont neighborhood.
The statue was constructed by a Slovak Bulgarian sculptor, Emil Venkov, under commission from the Soviet and Czechoslovak governments. While following the bounds of his commission, Venkov intended to portray Lenin as a bringer of revolution, in contrast to the traditional portrayals of Lenin as a philosopher and educator. His Lenin marches ahead fiercely, surrounded by torrid flames and symbols of war.
Lewis E. Carpenter, a resident of Issaquah, Washington, who was teaching English in Poprad, found the monumental statue lying in a scrapyard ready to be sold for the price of the bronze. In close collaboration with a local journalist and good friend, Tomáš Fülöpp, Carpenter approached the city officials with a claim that despite its current unpopularity, the sculpture was still a work of art worth preserving, and he offered to buy it for ,000. After many bureaucratic hurdles, he finally signed a contract with the mayor on March 16, 1993.
The Carpenter family continues to seek a buyer for the statue. The asking price as of 2006 is 0,000, up from a 1995 price tag of 0,000. - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Statue_of_Lenin,_Seattle

Alex and Matt

Alex came into the dining hall today and said, "This is going to sound weird—can you take my family's Christmas card photo?" So I did. And this is the result.

I like this one significantly more than the first one: Matt is smiling, Alex is leaning in, and you can see Matt's hands. (And Mom, you'll be glad to know I made him take off his coat. It hadn't occurred to him.)
